This was Azucar's first evening - it's the new Saturday venue at the Greek American Political Club (same place that hosts Havana Club on Fridays), so as to parking, dancing floor etc it's identical to that very successful Friday venue. Azucar is supposedly focused on Cuban music and declares itself to be "a Rueda friendly zone".
I got there at 10:30pm and it was pretty empty, though some people started coming in around that time.
We danced in a few Rueda circles, and were faced with two problems, both DJ related:
- The music was just too loud. Maybe when more people are present and the sound is not reflected so strongly from the walls and floor things are different, but it was ridiculously loud. The calls were inaudible due to that, and even sitting aside it kept pounding into my head to the extent that it was unpleasant. I went to the restroom once only to remind myself what silence sounds like. I know this is very subjective but I go to Havana Club on Fridays and An Tua Nua on Wednesdays and no issues there.
- Instead of letting each song end gracefully and give 2-3 seconds before the next song starts, the DJ made the song overlap by 5 seconds or so. This prevented dancers properly ending one dance and switching partners or switching to a different beat.
I ended up leaving after an hour or so because I wasn't enjoying myself, so please take my ratio on the music composition (salsa/bachata/merengue/etc) with a grain of salt.
If things change I might return, but as long as the music is played the way it was (volume + song end/beginning mixed), I'll stick to Fridays.
