I attended salsa at the BCCA on Dec 11th 2004. It was the first time that I had attended the Saturday salsa and I did so because I had heard the BCCA needed funding to hold onto their building. The class was fun, the teacher was very energetic and enthusiastic, putting the beginner dancers at ease. He taught a combo of Bachata and Salsa, which was unusual and therefore interesting. Unfortunately, as most attendees were beginners, they left very shortly after the class, leaving about 5 dancers for the whole night. This is a nice venue with a great dance floor. Is it because there is no alcohol license that people are not keen to support it? (we could buy water, soda and juice. I found parking to be difficult, but perhaps that is because I am not at all familar with the area.

Saturday night at BCCA is fabulous. I went there two weeks ago and had a blast. First, the parking is easy. The Coolidge Corner location is very convenient. The cover was $15, including food, class, and performance. You just can’t beat the deal. The floor was wide open, at least 3 times the size of Ryles. Classes started at 9:30, and they had both beginner and intermediate levels. Instructors were great. At around 12, the performance started. They were excellent. Throughout the night it was non-stop Salsa dancing. All the best Salsa dancers in town were there. Everybody was friendly. I had no problem asking more advanced dancers to dance. Also, there are bottled waters for $1 each. The downside of the night is that it was extremely hot in the dancing hall. There were couple of fans blowing, but it didn’t help too much. It will be brutal in summer. Another thing I see is that it might be intimidating for a beginner to go there because most of people are just too good.

I absolutely love dancing at the BCCA. Any special event or regular night (Havana Club - Fridays, Salsa Saturdays) at the BCCA is great for dancing. The fellow dancers are friendly, the music is great, and the floor is more than wonderful to dance on. Often you will find members of dance companies attending these events and/or regular nights - which means you can dance the night away or see some great dancing taking place on the dance floor! Watch out because you may also be captured in some great shots by, either, MambOriginals or MamBostOn2 and appear on their great websites!

I attended last Saturday's salsa night at the BCCA. I am impressed with the number of dancers there and the quality of music. I brought a friend who is very impressed with Jamnastics' lesson (taught by Anara and Engels). I think the lesson aspect is very important. All in all it was a wonderful evening. Whatever you did differently than before to relaunch the Saturday night salsa scene is working. I am also very keen about attending the Friday night Mambo night and the Saturday afternoon Mambo with Jeff's group. What a great idea to dance during Saturday day. I meet lots of professionals who live near the Brookline area and am trying to invite them to these events. I am so happy that there is salsa to be had near home and not worry about traveling down to Cambridge or South Boston for good dancing. Keep up the good work.

Last two weeks at BCCA have been fun. it's always been a marvelous floor, the problem has been attendance. Their new format seems to be working out so far. There has been much better representation across all the skill levels with measurable participation amongst beginner, intermediate and advanced levels. For the most part, people seem to be mixing pretty freely. Music selection has been very good- lots of great tunes and not the same old stuff you hear everywhere. I might have wished for a little bit more medium tempo songs as the night got toward the end just to wind down a bit from the faster pace. In my opinion, it's the best Saturday night option in town. P.S. I've had out of towners ask me where to dance On2 on saturdays... this isn't a bad bet as there has been a steady presence of On2 dancers from Boston's dance companies and social dancers these last two weeks. If you haven't been here before, you should be expecting this to feel more like a social than a club (and you can use your own judgement whether that's a plus or a minus)- Expect a friendly atmosphere, no alcohol, no club pick-up scene. Dress as casual as you wish. Hopefully people will keep the critical mass happening on Saturday nights here. Thanks to D. Martinez and Hernan for the tasty tunes!

This was so sad. I was really excited about another 'community center' place to go cause I like it when my cover goes to a good cause (el bembe is my favorite) but this was a big disappointment. I hesitate to write this because I'd really like more people to go there, but I've appreciated honest reviews in the past so here goes. There are two groups of dancers: the superstars who teach on other nights and generally stick to each other, and all the guys that just took their first class fifteen minutes ago. I hope the bcca finds its groove because the floor/music/lighting/parking and staff were great - until then I think I'll get my dancing done on fridays.

[editor's note] In response to past light attendance, at the end of Januaray the night was 'reformated' with many of the dance companies that teach at the BCCA participating on a regular basis, bringing with them their respective dance crowds. As the only place to dance primarily Salsa on a Saturday, it finally is catching on!

I would like to see this little venue take off. It has the best dance floor in town, and has a very small, very friendly feel to it. It is located in a safe neighborhood in Brookline, so I never feel funny going there by myself. One of the best salsa parties I have ever been to was hosted there in mid June. So I feel comfortable there, the music is really very good, the floor is the best in town, but it has simply not reached a critical mass of dancers yet. One would hope it would, so they will continue these evenings there. Bring a group of friends, and check it out.
