--------- (This first
announcement doesn't apply to most of you, sorry)
Instructors and
promoters, I have set up two new email lists, mostly for my use but you can
use them too. Right now they will be unmoderated, but if things get out
of hand or if they start getting spammed, then I will swiftly change
that. In order to be added to either list immediately, email
me directly, olaf@salsaboston.com. Right now you cannot add
yourself.
1) instructors@salsaboston.com -- this list is for people
that regularly teach latin dance in this area
2)
promoters@salsaboston.com -- ditto, except it's for promoters
I'll
also be periodically adding people I want to reach as I go through
my files.
Thanks! --------
**************** THE
Concert... ****************
Did you make it last Sunday? "To
What?!!" Symphony Hall of course! Well, the concert was
fantastic, certainly from my seat! I managed to get seats on the very
front of the 1st balcony, right on top of the stage. Many of you saw me
I guess...!
Celia Cruz was a lavishly adorned in a flowing ocean-blue
dress covered in sequined ostrich feathers, a sight to behold for us mere
mortals! I'd say the whole event was worth it just for that! It
was also a delight to be close enough to watch her facial expressions and
interactions with her band and a ceaseless stream of fans who snuck up to the
front for pictures (much to the annoyance of a couple security guards, but
that's just too bad...). To my surprise, her concert was much more improvised
than I would have thought, and she even did one evidently unrehearsed number
on request. That had the band scrambling for a minute, but of course
they put it together just fine. In addition she performed a variety of
her more popular Salsa and Cha-Cha. All in all, it was a show act not
easily forgotten.
Gilberto Santa Rosa, who opened the show, I think
actually had me standing up even more. He put together an extremely
"tight" show, also featuring a variety of his music. Unfortunately I'm
not one that knows his Salsa *music* too well (I know what I like when I hear
it), nor do I speak much Spanish (so I didn't catch much of what was being
said on stage) so if someone wants to review the music and the ad-libbing,
I'll be happy to publish it.
It was good to see Boston's Salseros well
represented, even with the ticket prices being on the high end. At the
end they announced an afterparty somewhere in Hyde Park. Did
anyone make it there? Please let me know how it was.
Anyway, I
hope everyone enjoyed the show as much as I
did!
***************************************** What's coming up

SalsaBoston.com Salsa Congreso: Coming at you
again this Fall!
************************* Picks of the
week *************************
To my delight, the "Salsa Social" thing
which is extremely prevalent in places like New York, is growing in Boston,
and we now have some decent dance places on weekends that are free from the
unavoidable pressures of bar guarantees, 'popular' music, and crowded dance
floors that most nightclubs must contend with on the weekend nights to earn
their own keep.
This weekend we have two such nights!
Saturday:
Salseros Unite! Presented by JAM'NASTICS with 2 floors, Salsa upstairs
and Hip Hop downstairs. Brazilian Cultural Center,
Cambridge.
Sunday: SALSA SUNDAY with April! VFW Post, Green Street,
Cambridge.
Details on both events are listed below at the beginning of
the mailbag.
