Boston's Salseros make a big SPLASH! Check it out! http://salsaboston.com/gallery/pr_parade2002/
Calling
all Salseros! This Saturday, we need you at the Miami Club!
After four weeks I've heard nothing but good things about this place coming
back from you, except comments like, "It needs more people." Well, if
you've been waiting to hear what it's like, now is the time! Moreover,
don't wait too long because if everyone does that then obviously the place
won't be open anymore when you do want to go...! There have been about
50 people there each week, not too bad (about half capacity), and the energy
in the club has been really spirited! Nothing going on this weekend
that I heard of so come on out and Salsa on Saturdays! Email
miamiclub@salsaboston.com to get on the VIP list ($10 VIP cover, $15
regular). Please support the bar, details below. http://salsaboston.com/miamiclub Also, $5 validated parking
around the corner on Beach at the Interpark Garage. Read what people are

restaurants within 1 block open until 4am
Q: Why is it $15? A: Well,
it's $10 if you're on the VIP list, just email to join. But to answer
the question, Salseros drink an average of about $4 worth of water on a night
out. On a Saturday, unfortunately that isn't going to do it.
A nightclub downtown needs to take in about $20 per person between cover
and drinks in order to be acceptably profitable on a weekend. Some of
that cover goes to cover what's called a "bar minimu". Nightclubs are
businesses afterall, so they need to have profit. That's the
unfortunate reality of it and Salseros have to realize that. But think
of it this way: around $20 for a full night of excellent Salsa dancing at a
beautiful club in a great location on a Saturday is a pretty good deal,
no?!
Q: What if I don't spend $20? A: Well, you don't have to of
course, it's a free society. But the bottom line still applies...
you're being subsidized. If the nightclub owner doesn't make any money
then it comes out of someone's pockets, usually the promoter's. While
most promoters can stand to take some losses, after a while they too have to
throw in the towel and the Salsa club closes in favor of a new binge drinking
night to replace it. So the real answer is, eventually the club closes
and Salsa on weekends stays in the dives out in the burbs. In a
round-about way, it is an obligation if you like Salsa in the city.
Going to a club is a service, like going to the
movies...

**************************************************************** 3) The
summer salsa picnics are in full swing on Sundays from 3:30 to 6:00 pm in JFK
park near Harvard Square. If you haven't been to any yet, you've been
missing out on a truly unique venue. If you wait till September to go,
you'll kick yourself for not having gone sooner. Here's why:
1.
There's lots of room to dance. The salsa picnic is around a beautiful
memorial fountain, with a hard surface rated by April as "good for double and
triple spins".
2. There are trees near the fountain for shade as
well as a large grass field where you can sun bathe, play frisbee, volleyball
or whatever is your leisure. Since the nearby Memorial Drive is closed
to car traffic on Sundays, people have come to the picnic on their bikes,
roller blades, and skateboards.
3. The picnic is FREE.
Everyone is welcome and encouraged to bring friends, kids, family, pets,
etc.
The salsa picnic is potluck. Bring munchies and music CDs to
share. Drinks too (no alcohol).
This Sunday, food will be served at
3:30. Come early before it's gone and to get a couple of hours of
outdoor dancing before resting and going to the air-conditioned VFW for
April's social (Wepa Salsa Sunday).
How to get there: The picnic is
around the fountain in JFK Park behind the Charles Hotel in Harvard
Square. By subway, get off at the Harvard Square T stop and walk
towards the river on JFK Street. JFK Park is on the right before you
reach Memorial Drive. To get to the fountain, walk along the back side
of the brick building (Harvard Kennedy School) and you'll run into it.
Note that Memorial Drive is closed to car traffic on Sundays during the
summer, so if you are driving, you'll want to avoid that.

dancers spin their wheels to help the hungry
Two years ago, a group of
salsa dancers formed a team to participate in the Ride for Hunger.
The
Ride for Hunger is an annual event organized by Project
Bread, the organization that does the Walk for Hunger every year. This Ride
will benefit the hungry people in Massachusetts. Did you know that nearly
half a million people in Massachusetts do not have adequate food, and that
one in five children under age 12 is hungry or at the risk of being
hungry?
You can help out by sending a pledge or you can become a Salsa
Spinner yourself and join us for the Ride!! You can check out the full
details about the Ride at:
http://www.projectbread.org/ride.htm
To send a pledge,
make a check payable to Project Bread and mail it to:
Salsa Spinners c/o
Eugenia Corbo, 14 Hull St. Apt. 4, Boston, MA 02113.
This year's Ride
for Hunger will take place on:
* Sunday September 22nd in Cochituate
State Park in Natick.
Riders have two choices: A leisurely 25-mile ride
and a more challenging 70-mile ride. We are hoping to have Salsa Spinners on
both teams. If you don't want to ride a bike, you can participate as a
volunteer. To participate in the shorter ride, you need to raise at least
$125. For the longer ride, the minimum pledge is $350. It sounds like a lot,
but if we ask our friends and coworkers and pull our efforts together as a
team, it will be easy to raise the money, and we will help feed thousands of
hungry people. All riders will receive a long sleeve T shirt and we will
have the Salsa Spinners logo printed on the shirt. In order to get the logo
printed on your shirt, you need to register by AUGUST 23. You can fill in the
registration form at:
http://www.projectbread.org/Ride/register.htm.
Remember
to sign up as a team rider and write "Salsa Spinners" as organization
name. If you need more information you can e-mail Ellen and Eugenia
at:
salsaspinners@yahoo.com.
See you on the dance floor and
hopefully on the Ride!!
Ellen Botshon and Eugenia
Corbo salsaspinners@yahoo.com.
