Salsa Cruise this Sunday! Pick up your advance discount tix. at http://salsaboston.com/cruise ********************************************************************
I
got home Friday night after the competition and found this in note already in
my inbox:
"great time last nite!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
great dj!!!!!!!!!!!! when will Ricardo be back to boston to dj a
salsa party? whens the next salsa competition?"
Well,
I'd have to concur, it was a great night! Congratulations to all
six couples who competed and did an AMAZING job! All six couples are to
be highly commended and drew continuous cheers from the 250 or so
spectators.
By the way, DJ Ricardo Loaiza will be back on Wed. Sept. 11
at Sophia's for a special party, and also on Wed. October 30 for a Halloween
Bash!
While this competition wasn't about who's "best", the judges picked
it as follows on that night:
2nd Annual SalsaBoston New England Salsa
Competition Results (amateur only): 1st: Jerry and Margarita, Ryles,
$600 2nd: Miguel and Waleska, El Caney, $400 3rd: Dwayne and Kate,
Sophia's, $300 Runners up: Frank and Brenda ("El Bembe"), Michael and Becka
(Ryles), Yaron and Stacey (Supershag)
Thanks to Regina, Johnny &

Productions for sponsoring the event! Jerry and Margarita, and Dwayne and
Kate, as winners of the finals and semi-finals respectively have been invited
to represent the Salseros in the Supershag "Duel of the Dancers" on Sept.
13th at the Mega Dance Complex http://supershag.com
Also, great performances by Johnny
and Andres (Salsa Y Control), and Joel Massicot and Ana! Check out info
on Joel's workshops this week at JAM'NASTICS below in the
mailbag.
(Unfortunately I don't have much video or pictures since I was
MC'ing. If you have digital pictures, please send them to me so I can
put them in the gallery.)
See you next year at the 3rd annual

Q:
Why is it $15? A: Well, it's $10 if you're on the VIP list, just email to
join. But to answer the question, Salseros drink an average of about $4
worth of water on a night out. On a Saturday, unfortunately that isn't
going to do it. A nightclub downtown needs to take in about $20 per
person between cover and drinks in order to be acceptably profitable on a
weekend. Some of that cover goes to cover what's called a "bar
minimu". Nightclubs are businesses afterall, so they need to have
profit. That's the unfortunate reality of it and Salseros have to
realize that. But think of it this way: around $20 for a full night of
excellent Salsa dancing at a beautiful club in a great location on a Saturday
is a pretty good deal, no?!
Q: What if I don't spend $20? A: Well, you
don't have to of course, it's a free society. But the bottom line still
applies... you're being subsidized. If the nightclub owner doesn't make
any money then it comes out of someone's pockets, usually
the promoter's. While most promoters can stand to take some losses,
after a while they too have to throw in the towel and the Salsa club closes
in favor of a new binge drinking night to replace it. So the real
answer is, eventually the club closes and Salsa on weekends stays in the
dives out in the burbs. In a round-about way, it is an obligation if
you like Salsa in the city. Going to a club is a service, like going to
the movies...

STARTING
THIS WEEK: Thursday August 15th ->LATINO MOTION
WORKSHOP ------------------------------------------------------
Salsa
Merengue and Bachata, among others, are Latino rhythms. For us,
Latinos, the way you move is probably the most important component of your
dance. Learn to dance with "SABORRRRR", adding movements to other parts of
you body besides your feet and hands: hips, torso, shoulders, pelvis and
butt. All of them, nicely combined, can make a huge difference when
you jump to the dance floor. So what do you think?? Do you want to try it
out and see how much you can improve?? Even if you don't take your dance
that seriously, come over and join us, we guarantee you will have a lot of
fun and, you will find lost parts of your body. After 3 years of
absence, Latino Motion is back: improved and with real
applications.
3 weeks: August 15th, 22nd, 29th 3
Thursdays: 7pm-8:30pm
1 location:
VFW
299 Green
st,
Central Sq, Cambridge
A deal: $12/1 class, $30/3
classes.
All levels. No partners needed. Dress comfortably. For more

***************************************************************** 2) Reminder:
The Salsa Picnic is happening this Sunday from 3:30 to 6:00 pm in JFK park
near Harvard Square. If you haven't been to any yet, you've been
missing out on a truly unique venue. If you wait till September to
go, you'll kick yourself for not having gone sooner. Here's
why:
-. There's lots of room to dance. The salsa picnic
is around a beautiful memorial fountain, with a hard surface rated by
April as "good for double and triple spins".
-. There are trees near
the fountain for shade as well as a large grass field where you can sun
bathe, play frisbee, volleyball or whatever is your leisure. Since the
nearby Memorial Drive is closed to car traffic on Sundays, people have come
to the picnic on their bikes, roller blades, and skateboards.
-. The
picnic is FREE. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to bring friends,
kids, family, pets, etc.
The salsa picnic is potluck. Bring
munchies and music CDs to share. Drinks too (no alcohol).
How to
get there: The picnic is around the fountain in JFK Park behind the
Charles Hotel in Harvard Square. By subway, get off at the Harvard
Square T stop and walk towards the river on JFK Street. JFK Park is
on the right before you reach Memorial Drive. To get to the fountain, walk
along the back side of the brick building (Harvard Kennedy School) and
you'll run into it. Note that Memorial Drive is closed to car
traffic on Sundays during the summer, so if you are driving, you'll want to
avoid that.
The summer Salsa Picnics are held on the 1st and
3rd Sunday of the month.

Here is a quote about Joel, excerpted from an
article by Sherry Lynn Blackwell in SABOR Magazine:
Joel
Simeon Massicot is a talented dancer and gifted musician from..the..island of
St. Croix...Joel danced with "DC Salseros", performing in Puerto Rico at
Bacardi's 1999 Salsa Congress...In November, 2000, Joel joined Seaon Stylist
Productions, best known for their outstanding style of Mambo dancing,
intricate footwork and precision spins and turns. They most recently
performed at the Los Angeles Salsa Congress and Bacardi's 2001 Salsa Congress
in Puerto Rico...He is as much fun to dance with as he is to watch with
his unmistakable style, inexhaustible energy and contagious,
boyish grin!...There's no telling where this young, multi-talented
athlete, photographer, dancer, musician, etc., etc., is headed, but you can
rest assured that he will make quite an impact, once he arrives!
