*** Labor Day Weekend Salsa Cruise this Sunday! ***
***                                             ***
***     Also, El Gran Combo Friday!  18+        ***
***                                             ***
***  Details below.                             ***

*** Tickets for the New York Salsa Congress available online now!
*** $250 without transportation through Sept. 3, for New England Residents Only!

Well, the details are in for the 2nd Annual East Coast Salsa Congress, coming up on Sept. 13-15, Kutsher's Country Club, Catskills, NY.  SalsaBoston has negotiated a discount price *from Boston* which will be $250 through Sept. 3.  After that, $275.  We are also going to coordinate transportation, which means either private cars, or if there is enough interest then we will provide a van again which will cost about $50 per person.  Last year about 60 people from Boston and Maine went down to the event.  This year it is similar in format, but a much nicer resort, so I'm told!

Rooms are separate, but they are about $125 pp.do., including 6 meals, tax, and gratuity.

Tickets and hotel room bookings are available online now.  You may purchase event passes for $250 through Sept. 3, after which the price goes up to $275.  There is also a no-cost item which you may select indicating that you are looking for transportation.  The various lodging options are also available for purchase.  If you have roommates, please indicate who they are by emailing nycongress@salsaboston.com after you make your purchase.

Are you looking for roommates?  Please post a message on the message board!

Q: Why is it $15?
A: Well, it's $10 if you're on the VIP list, just email to join.  But to answer the question, Salseros drink an average of about $4 worth of water on a night out.  On a Saturday, unfortunately that isn't going to do it.  A nightclub downtown needs to take in about $20 per person between cover and drinks in order to be acceptably profitable on a weekend.  Some of that cover goes to cover what's called a "bar minimu".  Nightclubs are businesses afterall, so they need to have profit.   That's the unfortunate reality of it and Salseros have to realize that.  But think of it this way: around $20 for a full night of excellent Salsa dancing at a beautiful club in a great location on a Saturday is a pretty good deal, no?!

Q: What if I don't spend $20?
A: Well, you don't have to of course, it's a free society.  But the bottom line still applies... you're being subsidized.  If the nightclub owner doesn't make any money then it comes out of someone's pockets, usually the promoter's.  While most promoters can stand to take some losses, after a while they too have to throw in the towel and the Salsa club closes in favor of a new binge drinking night to replace it.  So the real answer is, eventually the club closes and Salsa on weekends stays in the dives out in the burbs.  In a round-about way, it is an obligation if you like Salsa in the city.  Going to a club is a service, like going to the movies...

Makuta Music, (617) 335-3851, makuta_music@yahoo.com

Kill date: October 4th, 2002

‘Tony Perez Trio’ at the Regattabar, Cambridge, Ma.
Thursday, October 3rd, sets at 8:30p.m. and 10:00 p.m.

Featuring Tony Perez – piano; John Lockwood – bass; Bertram Lehmann – drums.
Special Guest: Ernesto Diaz – Percussion.

On Thursday, October 3rd 2002, Cuban pianist Tony Perez will be presenting music from his latest CD release From Enchantment and Timba to Full Force Jazz (Pimienta). Following his recent sold-out debut at the Regattabar, he returns with his current trio featuring John Lockwood on bass and Bertram Lehmann on drums, as well as guest percussionist Ernesto Diaz.
The Regattabar is located in the Charles Hotel at Harvard Square, 1Bennet St., Cambridge, Massachusetts. Ticket are $12. For reservations call (617) 876-7777 or visit concertix.com. Sets start at 8:30p.m. and 10:00p.m.

“A new wave of Cuban jazz musicians are appearing on the horizon. One worth checking out is pianist Tony Perez, who on his sophomore outing as a leader navigates a picturesque voyage that he calls From Enchantment and Timba. . .To Full Force Jazz. Truly, the enchantment is his prodigal piano skill with impeccable chops, well -tempered jazz harmonies, and a classical edge. . . . Perez is a young captain, steering with keen talent and originality through some of the freshest jazz waters in the Caribbean.”
- National Public Radio.org

Tony Perez has become one of Cuba’s most accomplished musicians to recently emerge from the island’s rich and diverse musical culture. Despite his young age, Mr. Perez has performed and recorded with the stars of the Latin American popular music scene, as well as the leading Afro-Cuban jazz ensembles from the region. In 1992, he recorded with Isaac Delgado on the singer’s seminal “Con Ganas”, a landmark recording of contemporary Cuban salsa. Later years saw him compose, arrange and perform with the legendary Fania Allstars, Celia Cruz, Jose Luis Cortes, and Giraldo Piloto’s group ‘Klimax’, who has called his bandmate “one of the greatest pianists in Cuban music.”
In 1998 Mr. Perez took over the piano chair in what may be the most internationally renowned Cuban group of all time, ‘Irakere’. More recently, “the amazing Havana pianist,” as he has been called by the San Francisco Bay Guardian, also has taken part in the production of the all-star collaboration “La Rumba Soy Yo,” a recording which received a Grammy in the 2001 Latin Music Awards.
As a leader, Mr. Perez has released two recordings, the 1998 solo-piano disc “Soneao” on Tamarindo Records, and the recent “From Enchantment and Timba to Full Force Jazz,” a sophisticated yet hard-driving collection of Latin Jazz originals released by Universal/Pimienta Records. It is available at major retailers in the U.S. through Universal distributions.

Since relocating to the U.S., Tony Perez has embarked on a musical exploration within the confines of the more intimate piano trio setting, to further the more acoustic and jazz-oriented side of his career. The Tony Perez Trio is his first stateside project and features John Lockwood on acoustic bass and Bertram Lehmann on drums. In this context, the trio delves into a combination of original material from Perez’ latest discs, and in what promises to be a distinctly Afro-Cuban perspective, presents a fresh improvisational approach to contemporary jazz repertoire. The trio will be joined by special guest Ernesto Diaz on percussion.

Mr. Lehmann and Mr. Lockwood are among the most prominent and active musicians in the New England and New York regions, and have performed with a wide variety of local as well as nationally known artists. While John Lockwood is perhaps foremost known in the New England region for his regular performances with The Fringe, Laszlo Gardony, George Garzone, Mat and Joe Maneri as well as Billy Pierce, he has also earned an outstanding international reputation throughout his career that includes performances with legends like Joe Henderson, Dizzy Gillespie, Benny Carter, Pat Metheny, Danilo Perez, Freddie Hubbard, and Gary Burton.
Mr. Lehmann has earned high recognition as drummer for acclaimed New England-based ensembles Mango Blue, Natraj, the Luciana Souza Quintet, and the Katie Viqueira Group. Additionally, he has performed with artists such as Paquito D’Rivera, Danilo Perez, Dave Samuels, Romero Lubambo, Kenny Werner, John Benitez, and Claudio Roditi.
