Just four semi-quick announcements this
week:
Tonight! Special Show at Sophia's featuring Esencia Latina
from Costa Rica. Showtime around 11-11:30. Lessons with Johnny and
Kelly at 9:15 as usual. Nightclub details below.
*** THIS SATURDAY
*** SalsaBoston volunteer brunch for Boston's Salsa Mini-congreso Noon at
my place in Chelsea RSVP to attend, for directions, and for rides if
needed. Call Olaf at 617-513-9841 or email olaf@salsaboston.com This
will be part party, part planning meeting, part info distribution for
fundraising for the mini-congreso on Oct. 15/16 Everyone interested is
welcome. Volunteers will be rewarded with discounted or free event passes,
depending on circumstances.
*** Miami Club: Staying open and new prices!
*** The last two weeks have seen a tremendous jump in attendance as Boston's
Salseros have stepped up to the plate to support it. Thanks to all!
As a result, we will continue to stay open, and we're able to offer better
admission prices now! Here's how it works: - No more VIP list -
Ladies only $5 before 10:30pm! - $10 cover - Doors are opening at 9:15,
lessons from 9:30-10:30 - Validated parking at Interpark Garage on Beach St,
only $5 Don't park at the lot adjacent, that one is $10.
As with
any new place, it's had its growing pains and we've had some great nights and
some not so great ones. But pretty much all the feedback we have received
since day one was really positive, and we all should thank each other as a
community, and also especially those who come support it regularly and have
stuck it through, even on some slow nights. Please continue to provide
your feedback. We had one suggestion for valet which we like, especially
given that some people feel uncomfortable in that area of town. Also, Check
out the reviews in the Nightclub section of SpanishBoston.com!
*** Larry
Harlow this Sat *** Details in the mailbag, but Larry Harlow is one of those
roots guys as far as Salsa goes, and helped define the genre.
Good concert no doubt, even though it's in an auditorium. 8pm Sat.
$5 admission to Miami Club for an afterparty with your ticket stub.
See
you on the dancefloor!

Larry Harlow is a master
legend of the Latin music we now call "Salsa." As a classically trained musician
he began to study music at the age of 5, following in his father’s footsteps. He
has a multi-faceted musical education, having studied at the most prestigious
music schools, including: The High School of Music and Art in New York City;
Brooklyn College (B.A. in Music); The Institute of Audio Research; and The New
School For Social Research, (M.A. in Philosophy). His specialties include Jazz
and Classical piano, conducting, composition, orchestration, and audio
engineering. Besides the keyboards, he also plays oboe, English horn, flute,
bass, vibraphone and assorted percussion instruments.
During the late
50s, he was so fascinated with Latin rhythms that he traveled to Cuba to live
and study the real Afro-Cuban sounds that are the roots of Salsa. As an expert
Salsa artist, he returned to New York to develop his own style and orchestra and
later to help create the internationally famous Fania All-Stars
group.
While a member and producer of the Fania All-Stars for fifteen
years, Larry Harlow established himself as a recording star with 35 solo albums
and 20 with the All-Stars. What's more, he produced over 200 recordings for
other artists. He has received six gold records and has received Record World
and Billboard awards in the following categories: Latin Producer of the Year;
Pianist of the Year; Arranger of the Year; Concert of the Year; and Salsa
Orchestra of the Year. Harlow is a former Governor of the National Academy of
Recording Arts and Sciences. He was the primary force in attaining recognition
for Latin Artists throughout the world by instituting the first Grammy for Latin
music. He himself has been nominated for a Grammy for his album "La Raza Latina"
a Salsa Suite.
He created and composed the first Salsa opera, "Hommy",
which he orchestrated and conducted at Carnegie Hall and repeated in San Juan,
Puerto Rico to rave reviews. Harlow produced and recorded the first Latin
Quadraphonic album. He was the associate producer and co-starred in two feature
films: "Our Latin Thing" and "Salsa."
Larry Harlow tours internationally
with his unique Latin sounds, taking it to Europe, Central and South America,
Finland, Africa and Japan as well as all the major markets in the U.S. Harlow is
a former owner of two state-of-the-art recording studios in New York. He is
currently playing, producing recordings end directing videos for major artists
in the U.S. and Europe. He is listed in the first edition of "Who’s Who in
Entertainment".
Click here to order on-line or call the Café Teatro at
617-927-1730 or the Northeastern Box Office at 617-373-2247 to purchase tickets
