Hola Salseros!

This issue:
-Olaf's Editorial Section
-This week's highlights
-SalsaBoston events
-Sponsor news
-This week's mailbag

Quick mention to begin with:  SalsaBoston's Halloween Party is Wed. Nov. 30 at Sophia's!  Cash prizes for best costumes in the contest.  Last year was a total blast!!  More details in the highlights.

In the meantime,

The 2nd Annual New England Salsa Congreso planning is peaking, with 20+ volunteers working on sponsorship, and it looks like we're getting great response!  If anyone has any contacts that might be interested in being part of the event (clothing, shoes, accessories, food, entertainers, nightclubs, CD/Video sales, etc. etc., basically anyone who might be interested in this targeted Salsero audience), please get ahold of Kelly at kelly@salsaboston.com so she can get you materials and the video for the connections.  Or, if you can make an introduction, we can follow up.

Can you say "PUERTO RICAN POWER ORCHESTRA" ?

AND!  It's official!  Sunday, Nov. 17 has been added at Wonderland, with the "Puerto Rican Power Orchestra".  If you don't know who they are (and some gringas--who will remain unnamed--the other night didn't), well, you should!  Crank up your PC's speakers and log into http://www.puertoricanpower.com/  You'll recognize it!

The flyer is going to press as we speak.  Check it out here:  http://salsaboston.com/congreso/flyer.html

So we've got:

(List maintainers, please fwd to your lists!!)

Sunday (Nov. 17):       Wonderland Ballroom (Entertainment Complex),
topping it off with Puerto Rican Power Orchestra!

Each day includes numerous workshops (20-25 total to chose from!) with local and international all-star Salseros, the "Mambo Mall" with all kinds of things to look at, buy, or wish for, food, and of course tons of  SALSA!  And at the end of the weekend, the grand finale, where you get to put it all to the test (think of it as the final exam), dance all night with Puerto Rican Power Orchestra, live!

Confirmed so far:

Cultural Explosion Dance Company, NJ (w/ 16 dancers!)
Latin Motions, New Orleans and L.A. (Troy Anthony and dancers)
Mambo Tribe, Toronto

Dee Scott and Karen Angulea from DC
others TBA
--- all of these dancers are teaching on1 and on2 ---

plus from New England:

Salsalort
Hips on Fire
April and the new Wepa Performance Group (you guys have a name yet?!)
Johnny and Kelly
Jamnastics
Andres and Ana
and more TBA

ALL FOR $99 before Nov. 8!  That includes a wristband that gets you into EVERYTHING including the concert.
Individual tickets to all events and day passes will be available too, though we haven't set the exact prices quite yet.  Stay tuned for that, or check the website in a couple days.  But the total deal individually is somewhere around $250, so the early bird pass is a real bargin!

Buy one now at http://salsaboston.com/register.html

Also, Individual Tickets for the Puerto Rican Power Orchestra, Sunday night are on sale right now with *no service charge* at http://salsaboston.com/store (but it's included with the event pass).

HOTEL:

Out of towners!  We've secured a pretty good hotel deal at the Tage Inn Somerville, for $89.95 per night plus tax (comes out to around $95 total).  That's about $20-$30 cheaper than the next guys.  It's a nice clean, professional hotel right of I-93, and is pretty much in the middle of all three venues.  Free breakfast, free parking.  Book under "SalsaBoston", 617-625-5300.

*** Miami Club: Staying open and new lower prices! ***
******************************************************

Please check out the Miami Club poll on the home page!  http://salsaboston.com

The last few weeks have seen a tremendous jump in attendance as Boston's Salseros have stepped up to the plate to support it.  Thanks to all!  As a result, we will continue to stay open BUT WE STILL NEED YOU THERE!  Fortunately we're able to offer better admission prices now!  Here's how it works:
- No more VIP list
- Ladies only $5 before 10:30pm!
- $10 cover
- Doors are opening at 9:15, lessons from 9:30-10:30
- Validated parking at Interpark Garage on Beach St, only $5  Don't park at the lot adjacent, that one is $10.

As with any new place, it's had its growing pains and we've had some great nights and some not so great ones.  But pretty much all the feedback we have received since day one was really positive, and we all should thank each other as a community, and also especially those who come support it regularly and have stuck it through, even on some slow nights.  Please continue to provide your feedback.  We had one suggestion for valet which we like, especially given that some people feel uncomfortable in that area of town.
Also, Check out the reviews in the Nightclub section of SpanishBoston.com!

Ana :)

FOR ALL YOU SALSA/MAMBO LOVERS!!!!!!

Are you interested in adding rumba and Afro-Cuban movement to your dance repertoire?
Are you interested in taking part in a cultural exchange?
Are you interested in learning some dance history?

?!?!ARE YOU INTERESTED IN TRAVELING TO CUBA?!?!

 Well, here's your chance!
JAM'NASTICS, in association with the Cambridge/Cienfuegos Sister City Project, is coordinating a week-long trip that includes both Havana and Cienfuegos, November 23-30, 2002.  We have a specific license from the US Department of the Treasury, so it is an approved, legal cultural exchange, and we will be able to fly directly from the US!  All travel arrangements are through Common Ground Education & Travel in Inman Square.
 The trip will include...
DANCE & MUSIC:
--   Workshops in Rumba, Afro-Cuban, Salsa and Rueda with top Cuban instructors!
--   Attend performances by Cuban dance companies!
--   Experience the famous “Cuban Nightlife” first-hand!
--   Percussion classes for those who are interested
--   Go to the famous Callejon de Hamer (where the best local rumberos gather for on-going impromptu performances)
DIALOG & CULTURAL EXCHANGE:
--   Meet and get to know “regular” Cuban people who love dance, just like you
--   Meet and get to know professional Cuban dancers and musicians
--   As part of the exchange, some members of our group will demonstrate and teach styles of dance which developed or evolved in the US, including, but not limited to, NY & LA styles of salsa, hip-hop, jazz, tap among others
AND MUCH, MUCH MORE!
--   Beaches, Museums, visits to schools, health centers and community programs
--   Day Sight-Seeing tours in Havana and Cienfuegos
--   Parties and dancing
The cost of the trip is $2000, which includes airfare, ground transportation, hotel accommodations, breakfast, dinner, sight seeing tours, entrance fees, dance & percussion workshops, Cuban translators and guides, etc.  Discounts are available for people who are interested in volunteering in some aspects of the tour.

There will be an in depth, informational meeting on Friday, October 18, at 7 PM in the JAM'NASTICS office.

Refer to the website (www.jamnastics.org) for directions.

Hope to see you there!
