Subject: Salsa Update #176: Now, Casino Rueda at Sophia's! Weekly.

Hola Salseros!
Formatting messed up?  Read this on the web at
     http://salsaboston.com/archive

This issue:
- Announcements and other orders of old/new business
- SalsaBoston events
- Sponsor news
- This week's mailbag
- THIS WEEK: Guest Salsa Editorial, "The Five Minute Blind Date"

Greetings!

If you're staying at home on account of the cold these days, I can't say I blame you, but let me just say that Sophia's has been hopping on Wednesdays the past couple of weeks.  Last night the windows FROSTED OVER!  So I encourage everyone to make the run to and from the car and come on out!

Also, you heard correctly!  Starting next Wed., Jan. 29, Salsa Night at Sophia's will include a Casino Rueda class from 7:45 to 9:15, as part of the night.  We're doing this because casino rueda is a blast and we don't see much of it around here.  In other words, we want to get it going in this area!  The lessons will be taught by members of the MIT Casino Rueda Group.  There will be an introductory lesson concurrent with an ongoing intermediate level class.  If you've never done Casino Rueda but know basic Salsa, take the introductory class once or twice and graduate up to the intermediate level.  If you've never danced Salsa at all, Johnny and Kelly's regular Salsa class will still be happening as usual from 9:15-10:15.  $12 covers you for the whole night ($10 after 10:15).  If you're an expert and don't plan to take Johnny and Kelly's class, you will have an hour inbetween to practice, have a drink, or get a bite to eat downstairs.

If you've never heard of Casino Rueda, it's an "exhilarating" dance that comes from Cuba via Miami, that can best be described as "Salsa meets square dancing", or "sychronized Salsa".  It's a group Salsa dance, with partners in a circle, there's a caller and and a bunch of moves that everyone knows.  As the dance progresses, everyone does the same moves together, often trading partners as part of it.  The whole thing is a blast!  If you ever danced in Miami, it's extremely popular down there.  JAM'NASTICS teaches some of it as well in Boston.

More details will be posted in www.salsaboston.com/sophias, and I'm hoping to put a little video clip up there as well for the novices.  (It's not there yet, wait a couple days...)

--

Old business:

Last Friday night at the Roxy was a bit of a disappointment to many (including myself).  The particular group performing was a popular latin house group and the DJ was very light on the Salsa.  I was asked by the management what I thought, and I pretty much told them, "we want Salsa", and they said that some of the acts will be that.  It is of course difficult to be all things to all people.  They also said they would like to hear your feedback, so if you have an opinion you'd like to share, please send email to roxyrsvp@salsaboston.com and it will reach them (your opinions will remain anonymous).  I have not heard what the act this week is.

LA Congress:  I have heard back from various people, thanks.  I am waiting for Albert Torres to get back to me on registration details.  Stay tuned.  If you have already registered or plan to go, please send a note to lacongress@salsaboston.com so we can keep track of who all is going from the area.

Hi Olaf,
Can you please list this event for us?  As you know, the economy has been hitting non-profits like ours pretty hard, and we are still struggling to be able to keep serving low income youth.  We are trying to fundraise $4,000 more dollars for scholarships over the next month.  We thought this would be the most fun way to achieve our goal!

Thanks again for your continuing support of our organization. Sincerely yours, Anara

From Hips on Fire
Hi,
As some of you know, the VFW had an electrical fire last week and we had to move the classes to another location. They haven't finnished reparing the building so Wednesday and Thursday classes will be held again at the YWCA in Central Sq. See you all there! and sorry for any inconvenience these changes may cause!

Wednesday Jan 22nd & Thursday Jan 23rd Classes this week at the YWCA -

Wednesday and Thursday classes will be help at the YWCA in Central Sq 7 Temple St Cambridge

Ask at the front desk for the Salsa Class Room.
For directions go to our web page:
www.hipsonfire.com

Latino Motion Workshop goes on this Thursday !

Per request of our students we are having another series of Latino Motion
Workshop this month. If you missed the first class, don't worry, you can still join us.

Salsa Merengue and Bachata, among others, are Latino rhythms. For us, Latinos, the way you move is probably the most important component of your dance. Learn to dance with "SABORRRRR", adding movements to other parts of you body besides your feet and hands: hips, torso, shoulders, pelvis and butt. All of them,
nicely combined, can make a huge difference when you jump to the dance floor. So
what do you think?? Do you want to try it out and see how much you can improve??
Even if you don't take your dance that seriously, come over and join us, we
guarantee you will have a lot of fun and, you will find lost parts of your body.
Come and learn with real Latino dancers.

2 more weeks: January 23rd, 30th

Location for January 23rd: YWCA
7 Temple St,
Central Sq,
Cambridge

A deal: $12/1 class, $30/3 classes.

All levels welcomed. No partners needed. Dress comfortably. No problem if you miss a week, although always better to come to all.

 Guest Editorial, by J.D.
********************************

I have often compared the invitation to dance, to a "five minute blind date". On many occasions we have not danced with, or related to our partners previously and know little about them other than what they present to us visually in terms of appearance and dance style. Like a date with someone new, I try to keep an open mind and approach the situation with a spirit of adventure and cooperation.  In other words, my objective is simply to try and have a good time for the next five minutes or so by relating pleasantly with my partner. On most occasions, we share this spirit of good will, trying our best to compliment one anothers' style, forgive mistakes with grace and good nature and to simply have fun! There are those occasions however when the person who accepts my invitation meets me with indifference and/ or a critical attitude around the occasional mistake or dropped beat. This in my opinion sours the encounter greatly and I will very likely not invite this individual to dance again.  On many occasions I have invited a lady to dance and found her skills wanting. When this happens, I do my best to help her feel at ease and not to seem put out. If a cue gets missed, I will attempt it again with a stronger lead, or if neccesary, a verbal cue or suggestion. In this type of situation, almost 100% of the time, gentle helpfulness seems not to go unappreciated.  As leader, I was not always as smooth and assertive as I was to become with practice.  I thank the many ladies who gently offered their feedback, as it helped me to improve without eroding my confidence.  It's really nice when we all try to promote an atmosphere of congeniality with what amounts to simple kindness and manners, it makes this dance scene we all enjoy so much nicer.
