*** RUMOR MILL ***

Two Floors of Salsa, more space, more dancing, more DJ's at Sophia's! Given the increased attendance at Salsa Night at Sophia's (Wed.) now that the holidays are over, in addition to  the extra people the new Reuda classes have been bringing in, stay tuned for the announcement of Boston's first ever "TWO FLOORS" all Salsa nightclub!  Yeah Baby!  Details are still in the rumor stage, but among other things, since we have so many DJ's with different styles we'll get two of them each night.

Also, rumor has it that El Bembe returns in 3 weeks, with an all new format including a mix of live and DJ'd music, performances, and various other features from week to week.

Lastly, a couple of re-recycled notices:

Starting Wed., Jan. 29, Salsa Night at Sophia's will include a Casino Rueda class from 7:45 to 9:15, as part of the night.  We're doing this because Casino Rueda is a blast and we don't see much of it around here. In other words, we want to get it going in this area!  The lessons will be taught by members of the MIT Casino Rueda Group.  There will be an introductory lesson concurrent with an ongoing intermediate level class. If you've never done Casino Rueda but know basic Salsa, take the introductory class once or twice and graduate up to the intermediate level.  If you've never danced Salsa at all, Johnny and Kelly's regular Salsa class will still be happening as usual from 9:15-10:15.  $12 covers you for the whole night ($10 after 10:15).  If you're an expert and don't plan to take Johnny and Kelly's class, you will have an hour inbetween to practice, have a drink, or get a bite to eat downstairs.

If you've never heard of Casino Rueda, it's an "exhilarating" dance that comes from Cuba via Miami, that can best be described as "Salsa meets square dancing", or "sychronized Salsa".  It's a group Salsa dance, with partners in a circle, there's a caller and and a bunch of moves that everyone knows.  As the dance progresses, everyone does the same moves together, often trading partners as part of it.  The whole thing is a blast!  If you ever danced in Miami, it's extremely popular down there. JAM'NASTICS teaches some of it as well in Boston.

More details will be posted in www.salsaboston.com/sophias/rueda.html,
with a video clip as well.

Hola Salseros de Corazon and The Tango Curious!!!

Have you peeked into the new Tango Room at Wepa, or watched one of
recent tango performances and thought "wow, I think I'd like to try
that tango stuff!"

Well, now the Tango Room brings you...

        With the first happening
THIS SUNDAY, February 2, at 9:15
with our own lovely LINDA MARCUS
        instructor with Tango Now!
in an exciting and unusual location...
the BIG hallway the leads to the restrooms!*

A number of local Tango instructors have expressed interest in
coming to Wepa to show curious salseros some tango basics. This way
you can get an idea of what Tango is about, meet some instructors,
and learn about classes and resources in the area.

This will NOT be a weekly event, but we'll try to schedule a mini
lesson every other week or so until we run out of willing

*It's true, a carpeted hallway is not an ideal place for a tango
lesson. But we simply have nowhere else to do these mini lessons.
Bring a pair of smooth, leather-soled shoes and we'll see how it

If you know anyone that may be interested please pass this on.

Organizing is incorporating live Latin Music into more events, guerilla
marketing and demos.   Do you know a one or two person local Latin music

We are looking for local Latin style musicians to play one to two times/month for 2-5 hours/gig.  The musician(s) will accompany Equal Exchange staff talking with consumers about Equal Exchange and fair trade. The locations will include: supermarket coffee aisles, commuter rail stops, and farmers markets and other non-traditional performance locales.

Pay: based on experience

For more information, please send resumes and cover letters to Virginia Berman, vberman@equalexchange.com

Equal Exchange is the country's leading fair trade coffee company. Our mission is to create more fair trade relationships between Third World farmers and U.S. consumers. We bypass the conventional marketing system by cutting out the middleman and buying directly from the farmer. Producers not only obtain a higher price for their products, but gain greater control over their lives. Most of our trading partners control their own coffee processing and marketing. The profits go to the producers, not the coyotes (middlemen). Farmers have been able to dramatically increase their standard of living.

‘Tony Perez Quartet’ at the Regattabar, Cambridge, Ma. Thursday, March 6th, sets at 8:30p.m. and 10:00 p.m.

Featuring Tony Perez – piano; John Lockwood – bass; Bertram Lehmann – drums, Ernesto Diaz – Percussion.

On Thursday, March 6th 2003, Cuban pianist Tony Perez will be presenting music from his latest CD release From Enchantment and Timba to Full Force Jazz (Pimienta), which has recently been nominated for a 2003 Grammy Award as best Latin-Jazz recording. Following his recent appearance at Boston’s prestigious First Night celebrations, “Boston’s imported . . . piano star of 2002” (Boston Phoenix) returns with his current quartet featuring John Lockwood on bass and Bertram Lehmann on drums, as well as percussionist Ernesto Diaz.
The Regattabar is located in the Charles Hotel at Harvard Square, 1Bennet St., Cambridge, Massachusetts. Ticket are $12. For reservations call (617) 876-7777 or visit concertix.com. Sets start at 8:30p.m. and 10:00p.m.

“A new wave of Cuban jazz musicians are appearing on the horizon. One worth checking out is pianist Tony Perez, who on his sophomore outing as a leader navigates a picturesque voyage that he calls From Enchantment and Timba. . .To Full Force Jazz. Truly, the enchantment is his prodigal piano skill with impeccable chops, well -tempered jazz harmonies, and a classical edge. . . . Perez is a young captain, steering with keen talent and originality through some of the freshest jazz waters in the Caribbean.”
- National Public Radio.org

Tony Perez has become one of Cuba’s most accomplished musicians to recently emerge from the island’s rich and diverse musical culture. Despite his young age, Mr. Perez has
performed and recorded with the stars of the Latin American popular music scene, as well
as the leading Afro-Cuban jazz ensembles from the region. In 1992, he recorded with Isaac Delgado on the singer’s seminal “Con Ganas”, a landmark recording of contemporary Cuban salsa. Later years saw him compose, arrange and perform with the legendary Fania Allstars, Celia Cruz, Jose Luis Cortes, and Giraldo Piloto’s group ‘Klimax’, who has called his bandmate “one of the greatest pianists in Cuban music.”
In 1998 Mr. Perez took over the piano chair in what may be the most internationally renowned Cuban group of all time, ‘Irakere’. More recently, “the amazing Havana pianist,” as he has been called by the San Francisco Bay Guardian, also has taken part in the production of the all-star collaboration “La Rumba Soy Yo,” a recording which received a Grammy in the 2001 Latin Music Awards.
As a leader, Mr. Perez has released two recordings, the 1998 solo-piano disc “Soneao” on Tamarindo Records, and the recent “From Enchantment and Timba to Full Force Jazz,” a sophisticated yet hard-driving collection of Latin Jazz originals released by Universal/ Pimienta Records and nominated for 2003 Grammy Award. Two other releases that he recently performed on, Juan Manuel Ceruto’s Bigband tribute to Emiliano Salvador “A Puerto Padre,” and Mayra Caridad Valdes’ “La Diosa del Mar” also received Grammy nominations for this year.

Since relocating to the U.S., Tony Perez has embarked on a musical exploration within the confines of the more intimate piano trio setting, to further the more acoustic and jazz-oriented side of his career. The Tony Perez Quartet is his first stateside project and features John Lockwood on acoustic bass and Bertram Lehmann on drums, and Ernesto Diaz on percussion. In this context, the group delves into a combination of original material from Perez’ latest discs, and in what promises to be a distinctly Afro-Cuban perspective, presents a fresh improvisational approach to contemporary jazz repertoire.

Mr. Lehmann and Mr. Lockwood are among the most prominent and active musicians in the New England and New York regions, and have performed with a wide variety of local as well as nationally known artists. While John Lockwood is perhaps foremost known in the New England region for his regular performances with The Fringe, Laszlo Gardony, George Garzone, Mat and Joe Maneri as well as Billy Pierce, he has also earned an outstanding international reputation throughout his career that includes performances with legends like Joe Henderson, Dizzy Gillespie, Benny Carter, Pat Metheny, Danilo Perez, Freddie Hubbard, and Gary Burton.
Bertram Lehmann has earned high recognition as drummer for acclaimed New England-based ensembles Mango Blue, Natraj, the Luciana Souza Quintet, and the Katie Viqueira Group. Additionally, he has performed with artists such as Paquito D’Rivera, Danilo Perez, Dave Samuels, Romero Lubambo, Kenny Werner, John Benitez, and Claudio Roditi. Ernesto Diaz is one of the most accomplished percussionists in the region and beyond, who, among many others, has appeared with Celia Cruz, Orlando “Puntilla” Rios, Dave Samuels, Mango Blues and La Timba Loca.
