Starting
Wed., Jan. 29, Salsa Night at Sophia's will include a Casino Rueda class from
7:45 to 9:15, as part of the night. We're doing this because Casino Rueda
is a blast and we don't see much of it around here. In other words, we want to
get it going in this area! The lessons will be taught by members of the
MIT Casino Rueda Group. There will be an introductory lesson concurrent
with an ongoing intermediate level class. If you've never done Casino Rueda but
know basic Salsa, take the introductory class once or twice and graduate up to
the intermediate level. If you've never danced Salsa at all, Johnny and
Kelly's regular Salsa class will still be happening as usual from
9:15-10:15. $12 covers you for the whole night ($10 after 10:15). If
you're an expert and don't plan to take Johnny and Kelly's class, you will have
an hour inbetween to practice, have a drink, or get a bite to eat
downstairs.
If you've never heard of Casino Rueda, it's an "exhilarating"
dance that comes from Cuba via Miami, that can best be described as "Salsa meets
square dancing", or "sychronized Salsa". It's a group Salsa dance, with
partners in a circle, there's a caller and and a bunch of moves that everyone
knows. As the dance progresses, everyone does the same moves together,
often trading partners as part of it. The whole thing is a blast! If
you ever danced in Miami, it's extremely popular down there. JAM'NASTICS teaches
some of it as well in Boston.
More details will be posted in
www.salsaboston.com/sophias/rueda.html, with a video clip as
well.

Boston Area Instructors Blaze the
Oak! By J.D. Smith
Last Wednesday night at Sofia’s, Boston’s top Latin
dance instructors set the dance floor ablaze with demonstrations of their
respective dance stylings. In what has become an eagerly awaited annual event at
one of Beantowns’ top latin dance venues, the areas talented pros came to the
fore in high style. Aprils’ on “2” bunch was fully charged as they
came out in pairs to blister the dance floor. Johnny& Kelly were on hand to
give an exciting demonstration of hardcore salsa style. Casino Rueda in an
amazing display of improvised moves, thoroughly wowed the crowd and left this
writer, and others I’m sure, eager to have a try at this exciting group style
salsa. Ruben and Lisa AKA “Mambo Slaves”, raised classic New York
style to dizzying heights with their smooth, and extremely sensual
performance. Representing Jamnastics, Andres & Anna almost stole
the show with their spirited offering . These two were an absolute joy to watch,
as they managed to pull off some moves that totally justified their reputations
as two of this areas’ top dance stylists. Seemore and Christina,
what more can I say about their sensuality, their connection, the way they move,
and oh my God, those daring closely timed moves! Chantal, Javier, and all the
rest who showed up to demonstrate. The Salsa community of Beantown is
grateful for the leadership you’ve shown as you continue to inspire us all to
dance with joy and abandon. You showed that no matter what style you
choose, on 1 on 2 or whatever, it’s the spirit of fun and community and passion
for dance that matters above all else. So everyone, choose your partners
and hit the oak! It’s time to
dance!
