Starting Wed., Jan. 29, Salsa Night at Sophia's will include a Casino Rueda class from 7:45 to 9:15, as part of the night.  We're doing this because Casino Rueda is a blast and we don't see much of it around here. In other words, we want to get it going in this area!  The lessons will be taught by members of the MIT Casino Rueda Group.  There will be an introductory lesson concurrent with an ongoing intermediate level class. If you've never done Casino Rueda but know basic Salsa, take the introductory class once or twice and graduate up to the intermediate level.  If you've never danced Salsa at all, Johnny and Kelly's regular Salsa class will still be happening as usual from 9:15-10:15.  $12 covers you for the whole night ($10 after 10:15).  If you're an expert and don't plan to take Johnny and Kelly's class, you will have an hour inbetween to practice, have a drink, or get a bite to eat downstairs.

If you've never heard of Casino Rueda, it's an "exhilarating" dance that comes from Cuba via Miami, that can best be described as "Salsa meets square dancing", or "sychronized Salsa".  It's a group Salsa dance, with partners in a circle, there's a caller and and a bunch of moves that everyone knows.  As the dance progresses, everyone does the same moves together, often trading partners as part of it.  The whole thing is a blast!  If you ever danced in Miami, it's extremely popular down there. JAM'NASTICS teaches some of it as well in Boston.

More details will be posted in www.salsaboston.com/sophias/rueda.html,
with a video clip as well.

PATHMARK MULTICULTURAL ARTS FESTIVAL OPENS NYC EVENTS
NUTRAMENT LATIN DANCE TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP
FEATURING FREE CONCERT BY "FULANITO"

Big Free Events At South Street Seaport  Sunday June 1

The Pathmark Multicultural Arts Festival announces a 14th year of big, free ethnic celebrations in East Coast cities, highlighted by AsiaFest, Saturday, May 31 and the Nutrament Latin Dance Team Championship, Sunday, June 1. Both events are scheduled from 1:00 to 6:00 PM on Pier 17 at South Street Seaport. The annual Festival brings communities together to celebrate traditional cultures, top performers in live production, and young talents sharing the stage with the stars. Free samples and prizes add to a party atmosphere.

The Nutrament Latin Dance Team Championship brings together Latin dance companies, ensembles and dance schools, competing with their most sizzling routines. The day is topped off with a free concert by Fulanito, the band that has been a nonstop success since it burst on the Latin music scene six years ago with its unique sound combining the traditional accordion-based merengue of the Dominican Republic with modern hip-hop and rap.

This year’s Team Championship is divided into a Youth Division (16 years or younger) and an Open Division including small-group (3 to 9 dancers) and large-group (10 to 18 dancers) categories. All winning teams will receive trophies, with additional prizes in each of the Open Division categories of a $500 first prize, $300 second prize and $200 third prize.

Enter now as space is limitied. Visit www.teambaile.com for more information.

This week.  Avivé Productions is proud to support this fundraiser.  If you do not wish to attend the benefit, just sign up online as usual for the guestlist, and arrive by 11:30 for a night of dancing and fun.  Open Call for Models, Dancers and Promoters.  Stop by in this casual atmosphere and meet with the organizers of this night to determine if we have a position for you.  Either reply to this email or when you sign up for the guestlist, in the Comments section be sure to mention your field or specialty and the time you will arrive.  We will contact you with more information.
Next week.  You may have heard the rumors of a second room opening.  It is true.  Due to the popularity and numerous requests for hip hop with a Latin flair, we will announce the details next week of the opening of this addition.  One room will remain traditional Latin with an emphasis on Salsa with a mix of Merengue and Bachata, Room two will offer hip hop and rock en espanol.  The good news is, you dont need to pick your vibe, you can check out both rooms for only $10.  Guest List will still apply for early arrivals and as always, ladies who are 21+ are free before 11.

WOMEN IN LATIN JAZZ CONCERT
THURS, MAY 8
8PM
$10, ages 18+
VILLA VICTORIA/JORGE HERNANDEZ CULTURAL CENTER
85 W. Newton St.
South End, Boston
Info: 617-927-1730

This event celebrates the invaluable contributions of women to the Latin Jazz movement. Women in Latin Jazz is an all-star concert featuring some of the best female performers from the New England and New York scene including pianist/composer Rebecca Cline, Venezuelan percussionist Ana Norgaard, Brazilian singer/composer and guitarist Teresa Ines, Chilean saxophonist Patricia Zárate and bassist and composer Jennifer Vincent. A must-see event!

Also--
"Musical Currents:  East-West, North-South and Back Through Time"

Lisa Brooke, violin
Wendy Rolfe, flutes
Sarah Freiberg, cello
Richard Stone, theorbo and guitar

Musical currents generally traveled East-West during the first centuries of European colonization of the Americas, with a few fascinating exceptions. Spanish, Portuguese, English and Dutch sailors, adventurers and settlers brought European musical traditions, religions, culture, and "goods" to the New World. The latter included the slaves who would have a huge influence on original art and music of the hemisphere.  Flowing back to Europe were not only novel food such as the tomato, but "curiosities" like Native American captives, and unique rhythms.

Our "Musical Currents" program will trace the Spanish and Latin influence on European "art" music, and also how the New World influenced European composers. Our program will lead listeners from the "Latin", and sometimes African, sounds of the Baroque through 19th century musical offspring, like the Brazilian Choro and Lundu, to the world premiere of a work by Brazilian composer Sergio Roberto de Oliveira written especially for the ensemble. We will illuminate how the later works all have their roots in a rich mix of European Baroque and Classical, New World Indian, and African rhythms and melodies. Our programs will be a quick instrumental tour, with spoken comments by the performers, of the musical currents which inspired composers and performers on continents thousands of miles from each other.
