Competition Update!
Six couples
competed last Friday at El Bembe Prelim round for the 3rd annual SalsaBoston New
England Salsa Competition! Congratulations to all and the best 2 couples
by audience vote each received $50 cash and advance to the semifinal round, in
late July. More preliminary rounds will be held for the next 6 weeks
around Boston/New England.
The schedule is currrently being worked
out for a number of prelim's, but there will be one at Salsa Night at Sophia's,
Wed. June 25. Contact kelly@salsaboston.com to sign up and receive reduced
cover as well.
In the finals, we will be giving away at least $1000 in
cash prizes and more.
The event will work much like last year:
1)
Amateurs only (due to lack of response in the past from pro's--if you're a pro
and want us to reinstate the pro division, let us know)
2) Preliminary
rounds around New England at various Salsa clubs, with 1-2 couples from each
place representing their club in the semi-finals. Prelim's decided by
audience vote.
3) Semifinals will be tentatively at the BCCA on a Sat.
toward the end of July, with 6 couple in the finals in early
Aug.
Official rules will be the same as last year (see last year's pages
at www.salsaboston.com/competition, new info soon)
We are also currently
selecting host venues for the preliminaries. If you have a club that is
interested, please let us know.
There will *tentatively* be
preliminary rounds at: (we are currently contacting these
establishments)
- Sophia's, June 25, and last chance in July - El
Bembe (6/13/03, congrats to the winners!) - Ryles - Union St. - Johnny
D's - Platforms (RI) - El Caney - Mangos - and many
more!
Lastly, SEEKING SPONSORS! If you or your business would like
to have your name associated with this event, also let us know!

Salsa
Night at Sophia's new includes a Casino Rueda class from 7:45 to 9:15, as part
of the night. We're doing this because Casino Rueda is a blast and we
don't see much of it around here. In other words, we want to get it going in
this area! The lessons will be taught by members of the MIT Casino Rueda
Group or JAM'NASTICS. There will be an introductory lesson concurrent with
an ongoing intermediate level class. If you've never done Casino Rueda but know
basic Salsa, take the introductory class once or twice and graduate up to the
intermediate level. If you've never danced Salsa at all, Johnny and
Kelly's regular Salsa class will of course still be happening as usual from
9:15-10:15. $12 covers you for the whole night ($10 after 10:15). If
you're an expert and don't plan to take Johnny and Kelly's class, you will have
an hour inbetween to practice, have a drink, or get a bite to eat
downstairs.
If you've never heard of Casino Rueda, it's an "exhilarating"
dance that comes from Cuba via Miami, that can best be described as "Salsa meets
square dancing", or "sychronized Salsa". It's a group Salsa dance, with
partners in a circle, there's a caller and and a bunch of moves that everyone
knows. As the dance progresses, everyone does the same moves together,
often trading partners as part of it. The whole thing is a blast! If
you ever danced in Miami, it's extremely popular down there.
More details
will be posted in www.salsaboston.com/sophias/rueda.html, with a video clip
as well.

BCCA
ROCKS THE FLAVA
Well that’s it , if by now you don’t know about the new
venue at BCCA, you must be living in an alternate universe or something.
Last Saturday (June 7) Olaf and all his partners in crime organized THE salsa
blast of the season so far.
In an extravaganza of salsa events
that rivaled any that have been seen here in a long while, BCCA sponsored a
series of tutorials and performances to benefit Jam’nastics that brought the
house down. Special guest star salsero Willie Narkorn from the LA scene assisted
by our own Annara, and Ana Tinajero from Jam’nastics, offered an intense
afternoon filled with top notch instruction for Btowns salsa freaks. I
personally learned enough that afternoon to have fresh moves for the next year
to come! I needed three RED BULL’s to get me to the evening, but it was
worth it, let me tell you!
After some brief tutorials, the party
shifts into high gear as the newly installed maple dance floor fills with
salseros from all over the Boston area. I was amazed to see so many great
dancers out and lookin’ good. The youth division of Jam’nastics took the center
stage to kick off the performances with an electrifying display of hip-hop style
that was truly amazing! Their energy and skill were a joy to behold, truly an
example of what can happen when youth channels it’s energy to creative, positive
purposes. Acting on the spur of the moment, Elsa initiates a scholarship fund
that in a single evening, raises $1500 for deserving kids in the program! Way to
go Btown!!
The women’s contingent of the newly `organized Salsa
Encendida, delivered a sultry, sinuous, performance that showcased the
choreographic talents of Anna Tinajero, who sadly , is leaving the area for a
while. Next, the men of Encendida led by Andres Giraldo, kicked off a number
that brought back some old school mambo flava. Let me tell you, this group
is going to be one of the top salsa companies around very quickly!
After we all danced till we were drenched, Ana Tinajero an Willie Narkorn showed
us what it’s all about. In a totally improvised performance, they
displayed some of the finest dance talent to be seen anywhere. Their creativity,
and playfulness was amazing and a joy to watch. The party rocked till
3am!
From now on, there’s only one place to be Saturday nights,
BCCA, ‘cause that’s how we do it in Btown!
--
Thank you note
from JAM'NASTICS:
JAM'NASTICS would like to give a big thank you to all
of you who came out to support the benefit event last Saturday. Everyone had a
great time and the show got a huge response from the crowd! In case you
didn't hear the annoucement at the party: we raised $1500 for the
Sponsor-A-Child program. That will provide scholarships for young dancers who
could not previously afford to participate. Thank you for all of your kind
donations. Also, thanks to everyone who attended the workshops with L.A.
salsero, Willie Narkorn, and the JAM'NASTICS Latin dance instructors. See you at
the next
party!!!
