$10 Cover, $2 extra for lesson (i.e. $12 before 9pm, $10 after) http://salsaboston.com/sophias

Salsa Night at Sophia's new includes a Casino Rueda class from 7:45 to 9:15, as part of the night.  We're doing this because Casino Rueda is a blast and we don't see much of it around here. In other words, we want to get it going in this area!  The lessons will be taught by members of the MIT Casino Rueda Group or JAM'NASTICS.  There will be an introductory lesson concurrent with an ongoing intermediate level class. If you've never done Casino Rueda but know basic Salsa, take the introductory class once or twice and graduate up to the intermediate level.  If you've never danced Salsa at all, Johnny and Kelly's regular Salsa class will of course still be happening as usual from 9:15-10:15. $12 covers you for the whole night ($10 after 10:15).  If you're an expert and don't plan to take Johnny and Kelly's class, you will have an hour inbetween to practice, have a drink, or get a bite to eat downstairs.

If you've never heard of Casino Rueda, it's an "exhilarating" dance that comes from Cuba via Miami, that can best be described as "Salsa meets square dancing", or "sychronized Salsa".  It's a group Salsa dance, with partners in a circle, there's a caller and and a bunch of moves that everyone knows.  As the dance progresses, everyone does the same moves together, often trading partners as part of it.  The whole thing is a blast!  If you ever danced in Miami, it's extremely popular down there.

More details will be posted in www.salsaboston.com/sophias/rueda.html,
with a video clip as well.

All right, everybody rotate!

If you're reading this, chances are you're already a full-blown salsa freak who can't wait to get their "swerve on" out in some club or whatever. And perhaps you've taken the time and care to improve your dance skills in group lessons? If so, I find myself wondering  just how others might feel about that particular format.

For me sadly there is something about them that just misses the mark. I think I've finally gotten in touch with what exactly it is about the group lesson thing that I'm not feelin'. For one thing they move too fast for me. I'm one of those spaz morons that needs to do something a thousand times really slowly and consistently before I can pick up the tempo. When footwork or partnering patterns are introduced they seem impossibly fast until they are broken down to their basic components. I seem to do just fine until suddenly the tempo shifts into high gear with the introduction of music, then it's almost as if  I were someplace else for the last ten minutes.

And then there's the gender gap! Somehow most of the time, at least in my experience, there are always more gents than ladies. This inevitably leaves a guy or two or three, without a partner and sometimes for substantial periods of time. Instructors tend to get a bit preoccupied with making sure the pattern is being taught properly, so that sometimes they forget to rotate the partners. Most of us have had the experience of spinning our "air lady"and attempting to "foot sync" a partnering situation for five minutes and  suddenly have a live partner rotated to us as the music starts. In my case a train wreck almost always follows.

At the end of it all, I'll at best come away with an approximation of the whole pattern, and end up using only parts of it in my dancing, and always feeling less than satisfied.  I've come to the conclusion that I for one do not learn well in this context. I tend to do much better in a one on one situation where I can do things at my own pace as many times as I need to while having the instructor's undivided attention for a solid block of time.  That, is my ideal learning format and I tend to progress nicely within it.

But somehow in spite of everything I've just said, I continue to take these classes with the hope that just maybe I'll pick up some usable fragments.  At times I ponder if there are any others out  there who might share a similar experience.  Just out of curiosity, I'd be interested in hearing from any of you.  Anyway, for now, "everybody rotate"
