must be amateur status, which most people in the grey area so far have
been. Contact Kelly if you're not

- Punto with Hacha Y Machete in
Lawrence! A great little club in the heart of town. About a 45 min
drive from Boston. Punto Final - 272 Broadway St., Lawrence Take 93
N to 495N, looks like exit 41b, then follow S. Union to the north for several
blocks, bear left at fork on South St. which then merges onto S. Broadway for
about 2 miles over the Merrimac River, then about another 1/2 mile on the
left. More on Burju's site: www.hymstyle.com
- Viernes con
Clave with DJ Hernan at the Brazillian Cultural Center Webster Ave on the
Cambridge/Somerville line (near inman and union sq.) Directions:

- Liquid Sky in Worcester! Another big/new
Salsa Night in the outskirts! 144 Commercial Street near the Centrum (big
coliseum). Take Mass Pike to I290 going North (is that I290 east or

Salsa
Night at Sophia's new includes a Casino Rueda class from 7:45 to 9:15, as part
of the night. We're doing this because Casino Rueda is a blast and we
don't see much of it around here. In other words, we want to get it going in
this area! The lessons will be taught by members of JAM'NASTICS.
There will be an introductory lesson concurrent with an ongoing intermediate
level class. If you've never done Casino Rueda but know basic Salsa, take the
introductory class once or twice and graduate up to the intermediate
level. If you've never danced Salsa at all, Johnny and Kelly's regular
Salsa class will of course still be happening as usual from 9:15-10:15.
$12 covers you for the whole night ($10 after 10:15). If you're an expert
and don't plan to take Johnny and Kelly's class, you will have an hour inbetween
to practice, have a drink, or get a bite to eat downstairs.
If you've
never heard of Casino Rueda, it's an "exhilarating" dance that comes from Cuba
via Miami, that can best be described as "Salsa meets square dancing", or
"sychronized Salsa". It's a group Salsa dance, with partners in a circle,
there's a caller and and a bunch of moves that everyone knows. As the
dance progresses, everyone does the same moves together, often trading partners
as part of it. The whole thing is a blast! If you ever danced in
Miami, it's extremely popular down there.
More details will be posted in
www.salsaboston.com/sophias/rueda.html, with a video clip as
well.

Hi Olaf,
How are you? I met you at BCCA a few weeks ago. I just
wanted to let you know there is a Waterfire event in Providence on Sat. July
26th, and the featured style that night is, what else, but salsa! For
anyone who has never been to waterfire, it is a very cool free outdoor event
along the downtown area of Providence. See
www.waterfire.com for more info on the waterfire itself. In
addition, on certain occasions of waterfire, Sovereign Bank sponsors a dance
night. They drop a dance floor in the middle of the street, hire a live
band, and then there are lessons, demonstrations, and open dancing under the
stars until midnight! And all for FREE! What could be better than
that?!
Happy
dancing! R ******************************************************************** 3)
During
the month of August, salsa dancing at Temporada Latina will begin at 9:00

permanent! Yeah!! So, please support this time change by coming early and often
during August!!!
Please help spread the word - email your friends and
tell your dance partners.

Corner By JD Smith
Count Those Blessings
So, what’s with
all this “malaise” I’ve been hearing talked about? Let’s just take a step back
and get a little perspective here. My mom used to call it “counting one’s
blessings”.
First off, we are fortunate to be located in an area
culturally diverse enough to even entertain the idea of a Latin dance scene. As
well, our close proximity to NYC allows us to avail ourselves of the immensely
vital Latin scene present there. From what I see, the Apple’s salsa crowd
doesn’t mind coming up this way to party in the Bean from time to time either,
kind of sister cities so to speak.
Let’s talk a minute about the
fantastically talented pool of instructors who give so generously of their time
and energies to help us all progress and enjoy our dancing at higher levels.
There are also the numerous venues that continually open their doors to our
crowd, despite what I am told are painfully thin profit margins. In fact, there
are enough places to dance to keep any salsero in clave six nights a week!
Then there are the various flavors of latin music that each have their
respective venues and followers, Latin jazz, merangue, salsa, house latin
etc.there appears to be a considerable variety of styles as well as presentation
formats to choose from. And let’s not forget the frequent visits from great acts
like Celia Cruz, Gilberto Santa Rosa,. El Gran Combo, Rueben Blades, Cubanismo,
Arturo Sandoval, et al. who bring their prodigious talents right to our door
steps in our concert halls and public venues.
As for myself,
between lessons, rehearsals, hangin’ out and dancing, my salsa week is pretty
full indeed, as a matter of fact, I could stand to back off just a bit to make
time to take care of other kinds of business. As far as I’m concerned, the fact
there are now existing several online newsletters and forums, is indication of a
good deal of vitality in the scene, any controversies not
withstanding.
I believe as well that controversy encourages a
healthy exchange of ideas and opinions so necessary to the health of any
movement or community and up to this point at least it’s all being handled in a
mature and respectful fashion. No, it’s not perfect and I’m sure many of us can
see lots of ways our little scene here could improve, but personally, I don’t
think I’m quite ready to think of it in terms of “malaise”, on the contrary it
seems to me quite healthy indeed. So, tonight, if you can, count those
blessings instead of sheep, you’ll sleep better knowing your salsa world is just
fine.
