PROPER
DRESS REQUIRED, no tshirts, jeans, caps
Salsa Night at Sophia's new
includes a Casino Rueda class from 7:45 to 9:15, as part of the night.
We're doing this because Casino Rueda is a blast and we don't see much of it
around here. In other words, we want to get it going in this area! The
lessons will be taught by members of JAM'NASTICS. There will be an
introductory lesson concurrent with an ongoing intermediate level class. If
you've never done Casino Rueda but know basic Salsa, take the introductory class
once or twice and graduate up to the intermediate level. If you've never
danced Salsa at all, Johnny and Kelly's regular Salsa class will of course still
be happening as usual from 9:15-10:15. $12 covers you for the whole night
($10 after 10:15). If you're an expert and don't plan to take Johnny and
Kelly's class, you will have an hour inbetween to practice, have a drink, or get
a bite to eat downstairs.
If you've never heard of Casino Rueda, it's an
"exhilarating" dance that comes from Cuba via Miami, that can best be described
as "Salsa meets square dancing", or "sychronized Salsa". It's a group
Salsa dance, with partners in a circle, there's a caller and and a bunch of
moves that everyone knows. As the dance progresses, everyone does the same
moves together, often trading partners as part of it. The whole thing is a
blast! If you ever danced in Miami, it's extremely popular down
there.
More details will be posted in
www.salsaboston.com/sophias/rueda.html, with a video clip as
well.

Latino Consortium Film Series
at the Strand Theatre
The Latino Film Consortium of Boston will host a
series of Latino Films at the Historical Strand Theatre in Dorchester’s Uphams
Corner. The Film Series begins on Sunday, October 5, 2003 at 7:00pm.
The first film “No Turning Back” will be followed by Q&A of Writer,
Director, Producer and Actor “Jesus Nebot”. Also live music by “Radhy Montero
Twelve Piece Orchestra”. “No Turning Back” is a film about an
illegal immigrant from Honduras, living in the United States working on a tomato
farm, who gets in trouble when he accidentally hits a girl with his employer’s
truck. Deciding to try to escape the law, Pablo goes on the run with his
young daughter Christina. As he flees from the law, his experience is
recorded in print and on video by a mysterious “Guerilla Journalist. http://www.noturningback.com/
Having
the film series at the Strand Theatre is an idea venue; the Strand opened its
doors in 1918 as a vaudeville movie palace and since 2002 has been featuring
national and international independent films. The Latin Film Consortium
based out of the Strand Theatre members are Victoria Jones, Executive Director
of the Strand Theatre, Fernando Bosso, Marketing Manager-Producer, Blanca
Bonilla, Independent filmmaker/writer, Josefina Bonilla-Ruiz,
Screenwriter/producer, Alberto Vasallo, CEO El Mundo Newspaper and Digna Gerena,
Independent/Filmmaker/television producer.
The mission of the Film
Consortium is to fill a void for films not usually seen in the Boston
theaters. The Latin Film Consortium would like to continue to provide
films by, for and/or about the Latino community to be shown at the Strand
Theatre. The result is a series of five interesting and captivating films
shown in the heart of the community each film night will feature live music,
ethnic food and interactive sessions with the movie producers, actors and
directors.
The second film of the series is “Blue Diner”,
Sunday, October 26, 2003 @ 7:00pm. “Blue Diner” is one of the few fully
bilingual American Independent films today. The story speaks of a Puerto
Rican mother and daughter dealing with the loss of a father/husband, lost
language and lost love. Presentation by Natatcha Estebanez. http://www.bluediner.com/
The third
film of the series is “Down the Road”, Saturday, November 8, 2003 @
8:00pm. This movie is not yet rated (sexuality, rape and some
violence). “Down the Road” A young Korean War Veteran returns home to find
his parents have died and his wife has left him for another man. He leaves
California roots for Middle America in search of a distant cousin; his cousin
has been missing for four years, leaving behind a wife and five daughters living
in a small town full of secrets, blackmail and murder. http://www.midcoast-pictures.com/dtrqt.html
The
fourth film of the series is “MI PUERTO RICO”, Saturday, November 15, 2003 @
8:00pm. “MI PUERTO RICO” is a Documentary by the National Latino Communications
Center Educational Media, 1996. This documentary follows a Spanish woman
who grows up in New York and goes to Puerto Rico to find her roots. http://ucmedia.berkeley.edu/sales/socialsci05/socimain4.html#movie38485
The
fifth film of this series “Almost a Woman”, Saturday, December 20, 2003 @

overcomes language and cultural barriers to achieve her dreams. “Almost a
Woman” was adapted by Esmeralda Santiago from her novel of the same title.
