Hi all!  After a few weeks post-congreso hiatus, we're back "in the office" so to speak!  If you missed the Congress, it was a GREAT TIME and many people have provided excellent feedback on the survey.  If you have not taken the survey, please do so!
  http://salsaboston.com/surveyoffice100/survey.cgi?survey=Congress

Also, check out the pix at http://www.mamboston2.com/photogallery.htm

I have to say it was a real joy working with everyone to put this event together, much more so than in past years.  Things really went off smoothly and everyone worked really hard to take care of the things they committed to doing.  There are in my estimation over 100 people that contributed time and effort to make the event happen.  THANK YOU ALL!  Particularly I'd like to mention Sid and Faye from MIT Casino Rueda Group, Roberto Terrones, and of course Kelly Silfies.  These people made up the core organization and worked their "hienies" off the week of the congress!

Additionally, we have tentative commitments from several people to begin planning the 2004 Boston Congress starting next month, and to make it a national/international caliber event.  Stay tuned for that announcement soon!

In the meantime, tickets for LA 2004 are on sale already, and the rock bottom prices are available until Nov. 30.  See mailbag for more details.  Be sure to register under SalsaBoston.  http://www.alberttorresevents.com/news/wcsc04_102903.htm

Temporada Latina (@ Ryles, Thursdays) is hosting the "Salsa Sprint" fundraiser for Shriners Hospitals this coming Thursday.  What it is, is a 3 hour dance-a-thon, wherein anyone that wants to is requested to seek sponsors who will pay say $5-$10/hour.  Dancers will be checked in and out of the dance floor I believe, during the 3 hour period, and sponsors will basically donate an amount equal to the hours danced x the amount pledged.  You can also sponsor a fixed amount.

In support of the event, I have developed a little online pledge program!

http://salsaboston.com/sprint/

Here's how it works.  You can either:
1) Sign up as a dancer and have people sponsor you
2) Sign up to sponsor someone
3) Both! (ex. sponsor yourself)

You can also pay online if you want, either in advance or afterwords!  The page also lists who is dancing and how much money we've raised through this program so far.  Please contribute!

Also, if you find any problems with the form, please let me know.  info@salsaboston.com

Suzanne told me there are a lot of people willing to sponsor someone, but very few dancers!  So sign up now!  Right now you can sponsor **me**!  Select Olaf "El Gringo de la Salsa"  But as soon as some other people add themselves, you can sponsor them too.  So if there's anyone you want to sponsor, let them know right away!

Also, here's the link for the event.  http://www.tlsalsa.com/salsasprint
Or see the mailbag for the latest.

PROPER DRESS REQUIRED, no tshirts, jeans, caps

Salsa Night at Sophia's new includes a Casino Rueda class from 7:45 to 9:00, as part of the night.  We're doing this because Casino Rueda is a blast and we don't see much of it around here. In other words, we want to get it going in this area!  The lessons will be taught by members of JAM'NASTICS.  There will be an introductory lesson concurrent with an ongoing intermediate level class. If you've never done Casino Rueda but know basic Salsa, take the introductory class once or twice and graduate up to the intermediate level.  If you've never danced Salsa at all, Johnny and Kelly's regular Salsa class will of course still be happening as usual from 9:00-10:00.  $12 covers you for the whole night ($10 after 10:00).  If you're an expert and don't plan to take Johnny and Kelly's class, you will have an hour inbetween to practice, have a drink, or get a bite to eat downstairs.

If you've never heard of Casino Rueda, it's an "exhilarating" dance that comes from Cuba via Miami, that can best be described as "Salsa meets square dancing", or "sychronized Salsa".  It's a group Salsa dance, with partners in a circle, there's a caller and and a bunch of moves that everyone knows.  As the dance progresses, everyone does the same moves together, often trading partners as part of it.  The whole thing is a blast!  If you ever danced in Miami, it's extremely popular down there.

More details will be posted in www.salsaboston.com/sophias/rueda.html,
with a video clip as well.

Hello Everyone.

Here comes Salsa Sprint! Below are lots of details broken down into easy to access categories. Feel free to contact me if you need any additional information.

Thank  you:
First I would like to thank you for participating in Salsa Sprint. It will be great fun for an even greater cause! Can you believe it is next week?! Wow! November 20th is coming fast!

Make sure you've registered so you are on the guest list:
As "sprinters" you will enter Ryles for free. If you have not registered yet, please do so at www.tlsalsa.com/salsasprint so your name will be at the door. Everyone else pays $8.00.

  [  go here for pledging!! http://salsaboston.com/sprint/ ]

Bring pledge sheet:
Please bring a copy of your pledge sheet with you. You will need your original to assist you in collecting your pledges.

When:
On Thursday, November 20th the doors open and the music begins at 8:30 p.m. There will be dancing until 1:00 a.m.! Remember, the night is open to all.

Salsa Sprint begins promptly at 9:30 p.m. so please arrive early.

Where:
Ryles Jazz Club, 212 Hampshire Street, Inman Square, Cambridge.

Who do I dance with?
You can dance with anyone you wish during the evening. "Non-sprinters" are being encouraged to come and dance with us "sprinters" to make sure no one is left without a partner.

Have fun and take care of you:
Please remember, the purpose of the event is to help a hospital, not fill it with salsa dancers. It is supposed to be a fun, relaxed time of dancing for a good cause. Keep that in mind. You know your body; please listen to it. Rest when you need to. It's not only allowed, it is encouraged.

It's not too late for your friends to join in:
Please encourage your friends to join us. It is never too late to join! They don't have to worry that they only have a week left to raise money -  even a little bit helps!

The Grand Prize:
Salsa classes and private lessons have been donated by local instructors!
Two Grand Prizes will be awarded: One to the person that raises the most money and one to the person with the greatest number of sponsors. The more money the winners raise, the greater their prize! Log on to www.tlsalsa.com/grandprizes for more details.

Thank you to local instructors!
As organizer of the event, I, Suzanne Steele, thank all of the instructors that have given so generously. I encourage everyone to take advantage of the services they offer. Contact information and links to their web sites are at www.tlsalsa.com/grandprizes.

How does Salsa-Sprint work?:
If you have never participated in a walk-a-thon or dance-a-thon, here is how it works:

First you register to dance at www.tlsalsa.com/salsasprint and print out a pledge/donation sheet.

Second, ask your friends, family, colleagues, and employer to either make a flat donation or sponsor you (definitions below). Send out a general e-mail to your friends and family and tell them what you are doing.

There are no minimum sponsorship amounts, nor maximum amounts. Donations of all sizes are great. Let people donate/sponsor you according to what they can give.

Third, come on the 20th to Temporada Latina and dance! Enjoy!

Last, collect the money (checks made payable directly to Shriners Hospital for Children) pledged/donated and bring it to me, Suzanne, at Temporada Latina. Once it is all collected, I'll bring it to the hospital.

Definitions:

Flat Donation means a person or company will donate a set amount of money to shriners Hospital for Children whether you dance all 3 hours or just 3 minutes. For example, if a friend says they will make a $10.00 donation, they will write a check for $10.00 no matter how much or little you dance. You can collect this money in advance.

Pledge per half hour means a person or company will pay you a set amount of money for each half hour that you dance. For example, a company might sponsor you $10.00 per half hour. If you dance an hour and a half, they would write a check to Shriners Hospital for $30.00. If you dance all three hours, they would write a check for $60.00

Matching Funds policy: If you work for a large company, ask if they have a policy where they will match funds. This means that for every dollar you raise, they will donate a dollar, or maybe for every dollar you raise they will donate .50¢ - it will depend upon their policy.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I look forward to sharing the dance floor with you.
