Well friends, Happy New Year to all!  Time to start out the new year with a bang, so hopefully see you at Sophia's tonight with DJ Nik!  I for one need to dance off a few pounds...  By the way, pictures from the New Year's Party at Sophia's:  http://www.djdmartinez.com/pictures/archive18.htm

Some people have been asking about the LA Congress at the end of May, which has been well attended by Boston Salseros in the past few years.  Ticket prices go up again at the end of January.  Through Jan.31, event passes are only $300, and rooms are $95.  Evening only passes are also available.
  General info: http://alberttorresevents.com/congress/2004/
  Registration form:
  http://www.alberttorresevents.com/congress/reg/regform/registration_LA04.pdf
Be sure to write "SalsaBoston" in the "referred by" section for
  their attendence records!

Speaking of starting out with a bang, I've been over at BCCA a fair bit this week working on various things, and I noticed a lot of new energy out there!  Thanks to all that have been attending events at the Center.  The revenue from events goes a long way toward paying the rent at the Center, which as you may have read, was on the edge of the fiscal abyss last month.  Fortunately with all the recent support it's not quite on the edge anymore, but definitely not out of danger.  Please spread the word that the dancing at BCCA is HOT!  Right now there are Salsa events Friday night and Saturday afternoon with Jeff Robinson's Havana Club, and of course Noche de la Salsa on Saturday night with SalsaBoston (see further down).

  This from Havana Club:

Friday evening, January 9th, there will be a beginner salsa lesson
from 9-10pm followed by a salsa dance from 10-1am. Admission is $10.

Saturday afternoon, January 10th, there will be a beginner salsa
lesson from 1-2pm, followed by a salsa dance from 2-4:15pm. Admission
is $5 for the dance, and $10 with the lesson.

Please note that the Saturday Socials are regular events and the
Friday Fiestas will be held until El Bembe is back in session.

BCCA  14 Green Street, Brookline (Coolidge Corner)

  All ages welcome.

Tentatively, we will be relaunching the Saturday night with JAM'NASTICS, SALSAlort, Hacha y Machete, and Johnny and Kelly, on Saturday Jan. 17th.  This is a slightly revised format, and hopefully we'll have them ALL dancing with you each week at THE ONLY PLACE FOR SALSA ON SATURDAYS!!

www.salsaboston.com/bcca

And, keep your eyes out for upcoming workshops with Salsa Y Control (Jan 24, see mailbag), and Ana Tinajero Massicot (Jan 31, tentative, details TBA).

BY THE WAY:  this week is open house at BCCA, so FREE CLASSES ALL WEEK. Check it out at www.bccaonline.com or scroll down to the mailbag.

Enough for now!

See you on the dancefloor.

PROPER DRESS REQUIRED, no tshirts, jeans, caps

Salsa Night at Sophia's new includes a Casino Rueda class from 7:45 to 9:00, as part of the night.  We're doing this because Casino Rueda is a blast and we don't see much of it around here. In other words, we want to get it going in this area!  The lessons will be taught by members of JAM'NASTICS.  There will be an introductory lesson concurrent with an ongoing intermediate level class. If you've never done Casino Rueda but know basic Salsa, take the introductory class once or twice and graduate up to the intermediate level.  If you've never danced Salsa at all, Johnny and Kelly's regular Salsa class will of course still be happening as usual from 9:00-10:00.  $12 covers you for the whole night ($10 after 10:00).  If you're an expert and don't plan to take Johnny and Kelly's class, you will have an hour inbetween to practice, have a drink, or get a bite to eat downstairs.

If you've never heard of Casino Rueda, it's an "exhilarating" dance that comes from Cuba via Miami, that can best be described as "Salsa meets square dancing", or "sychronized Salsa".  It's a group Salsa dance, with partners in a circle, there's a caller and and a bunch of moves that everyone knows.  As the dance progresses, everyone does the same moves together, often trading partners as part of it.  The whole thing is a blast!  If you ever danced in Miami, it's extremely popular down there.

More details will be posted in www.salsaboston.com/sophias/rueda.html,
with a video clip as well.

1)
Once again I'd like to thank everyone who attended the recent salsa dance fundraisers in support of the BCCA.  We had a great time and definitely made a difference. Friday night about 80 people danced, and the boogeying continued 'til 1:30am; about 20 people participated in Saturday's social.

This week, Havana Club will be running two events at the BCCA.

Friday evening, January 9th, there will be a beginner salsa lesson from 9-10pm followed by a salsa dance from 10-1am. Admission is $10.

Saturday afternoon, January 10th, there will be a beginner salsa lesson from 1-2pm, followed by a salsa dance from 2-4:15pm. Admission is $5 for the dance, and $10 with the lesson.

Please note that the Saturday Socials are regular events and the Friday Fiestas will be held until El Bembe is back in session.

Also, Mambo Mondays are being moved from Toast to a new location and the new venue and re-start date are still being worked on.  Why the move from Toast? That place was designed for 100-200 people. And though Mambo Mondays has had a nice start, we averged 50-80 attendees. Don't worry though- we'll be back, and in style.

Best regards,

Jeff Robinson 617.312.5550

Dear Friends:

On behalf of the BCCA organization, we would like to thank everyone who contributed to our recent fundraising appeal. Through donations, Multi-Pass purchases, class registrations, and fundraising events, the BCCA was able to raise $8000 in 8 days and make our December rent and loan payments! However, we still need to raise $10,000 to meet the remainder of our obligations. Please give. Every little amount counts. You have already proven that we can reach our goal. Contributing is easy:

On-line: www.bccaonline.com/support/IndividualGiving.htm
Mail: Brookline Community Center for the Arts, 14 Green Street, Brookline, MA 02446
Phone: 617-738-2800. Call us or stop by to purchase a Multi-Pass or gift certificate, register for a class, book a private lesson, or to rent studio/event space.

Your support is helping to make our Winter session of classes our best yet! As a special treat, we invite you to attend our week-long open house January 5th through 11th. Last year's open house was full of great fun and energy, so you don't want to miss this one. Next week's open house includes over 200 free trial & demo classes, events, and workshops. It features our BCCA staff & faculty who make up over 100 expert artists from the Greater Boston Area and the International scene, many of which have their own dance and/or theater companies. For a schedule of this week's open house, please visit our web site. Our Winter session class schedule will be updated online by Monday and may be browsed at http://www.bccaonline.com/cgi/weekly.php

The classes for the latter part of the week will be posted no later than Tuesday morning. Most classes and times will remain the same as in the Fall session, so if you have a Fall brochure, you may still effectively reference it. In any case, you can't miss - just show up at the BCCA for up to 6 simultaneous class offerings.

Also, please contact us if you are interested in volunteering at the center. For more information, visit our web site and click on 'We Need Volunteers!'

If you have any questions, please call us at 617-738-2800. We are grateful for your enthusiasm and support, and we look forward to seeing you at our open house classes and events.

Thanks!
