Subject: Salsa Update #226: Salsa Cruises start and Juan Matos coming to Boston

Welcome back everyone from the LA congress!  Boston was definitely well represented.  Congratulations to all the performance groups as well, and I also want to thank all of Boston myself for the award I received from Albert Torres--it is ultimately all of you out there that made it all possible.  Incidentally, those of you that want to go next year, right now Albert is offering passes for ony $200 for a limited time!  (This is in part to offset the unfortunate losses of a major ticket forgery scandal that unfolded this year--read more on Albert's website.  See mailbag for more details on this offer.)

A lot of great stuff is coming up this next week!

SalsaBoston's 4th Annual Salsa Harbor Cruise Series kicks off a week from Sunday (June 20) for our biggest season yet!  The harbor cruises, if you haven't been to one, are every Sunday this summer and go like this:
6:00pm:  Pre-Party begins at The Landing (Long Warf)
7:00pm:  Salsa Lesson on the dock with Johnny and Kelly
7:30pm:  Boarding begins, dancing on board at the dock
8:00pm:  Departure--dancing on two decks, Salsa with D. Martinez, and Latin Mix
with Mike Mercado.  Latin Buffet and Cash Bar available.
~10:15pm: Return to dock, FREE afterparty at Sanctuary until 2am, a great new
place we found only one block away

We expect about 300 people each week this year.  Don't miss the excitement!
Tickets: $15 advance, $20 at the dock.  Lesson is $2 extra as usual.
SEASON PASS (new this year): $100, gets you on 11 cruises!

Plus...
JULY 4th Salsa Cruise with Fireworks!  Stay tuned for more details for that evening.

The new Salsa Cruise website is up!  Check out all the details, press releases, online ticket ordering, and more.  www.salsaboston.com/cruise04

Lessons are month by month, so you can develop a sense of continuity with each instructor.

ALL AGES
www.salsaboston.com/bcca

Q: Why all this?

A: Well, we have been listening to the feedback from many people for the last 8 months since the BCCA opened, and observed what people want and like, and we came up with this format to put together Boston's ONLY Saturday Salsa Night, and not only that, in a spacious facility with Boston's best dance floors and without all the nightclub hassle.  This is truly an event "by Salseros for Salseros".

Q: Will there be people there?

A: Absolutely!  This night is being put together by four dance companies, two DJ's, SalsaBoston, the BCCA, and many friends.  We intend that this will be the premier Salsa Night on a weekend in Boston with a full house every week!

Q: Where can I find more info about the night, parking, lessons, etc.?

A: Several places:
- Scroll down to the Mailbag item 1 for more reopening info
- Check out www.salsaboston.com/bcca
- Check out the BCCA website www.bccaonline.com
- Call Olaf at 617-513-9841 to make group reservations and if you have specific
   questions.
- Call BCCA at 617-738-2800 for general information about BCCA, classes, workshops, sponsorship and contributions, and studio rentals for private parties and workshops.

Q: Is there alcohol?

A: No, not at present due to licensing.  However, we don't intend to let that detract from the party, as past experience has shown!  Furthermore that allows the night to be open to all ages, particularly the college people who are left out in the dark by the nightclubs.  BCCA is in the process of seeking a liquor license so that patrons may enjoy some drinks, but this is a long and involved process.  Juice, soda, and water are available, as well as some snacks.  If there is demand, we will be looking into light food service like pizza slices and empanadas, etc.

Salsa Night at Sophia's new includes a Casino Rueda class from 7:45 to 9:00, as part of the night.  We're doing this because Casino Rueda is a blast and we don't see much of it around here. In other words, we want to get it going in this area!  The lessons will be taught by members of JAM'NASTICS.  There will be an introductory lesson concurrent with an ongoing intermediate level class. If you've never done Casino Rueda but know basic Salsa, take the introductory class once or twice and graduate up to the intermediate level.  If you've never danced Salsa at all, Johnny and Kelly's regular Salsa class will of course still be happening as usual from 9:00-10:00.  $12 covers you for the whole night ($10 after 10:00).  If you're an expert and don't plan to take Johnny and Kelly's class, you will have an hour inbetween to practice, have a drink, or get a bite to eat downstairs.

If you've never heard of Casino Rueda, it's an "exhilarating" dance that comes from Cuba via Miami, that can best be described as "Salsa meets square dancing", or "sychronized Salsa".  It's a group Salsa dance, with partners in a circle, there's a caller and and a bunch of moves that everyone knows.  As the dance progresses, everyone does the same moves together, often trading partners as part of it.  The whole thing is a blast!  If you ever danced in Miami, it's extremely popular down there.

More details will be posted in www.salsaboston.com/sophias/rueda.html,
with a video clip as well.

1)
Dear Friends,

It is my pleasure to inform you that Havana Club has found an amazing new
venue for our Friday Night Salsa parties! Located right next door to the Green
St. Grill, The Greek American Political Club has a beautiful 5400 square foot
ballroom. That is enough space to fit 300 salseros! And in addition to its great
location, all-wood dancefloor, and huge raised performance stage, we have
restaurant and bar facilities.  That means that our cultural events can feature
traditional food dishes and drinks! I have taken Johnny Giraldo, Juliana Melo, and
Ivan Skopovi by to see the place and they love it as much as I do. On behalf of the
team at Havana Club, please join us for the grand opening of Friday Night Salsa!

  Havana Club Friday Night Salsa!
June 18th @ GAPC Ballroom, 288 Green St, Central Sq, Cambridge
8-9pm Rueda Lessons. 9-10pm Salsa Lessons w/ Salsa y Control
10-1am Dance Party w/ DJ D Martinez
$10. Ages: 18+ (21 to drink)

Last week we had a nice turnout for the Friday KidsNight. Salsa con Clase gave
tremendous performances and, as Johnny Giraldo put it, they showed that they are
more than the future of salsa- they are the present!

This week, we will have our final Friday Fiesta at the BCCA. In recognition of his
sponsorship of and ongoing relationship with Havana Club, Dan Marshall will
conduct a special workshop this week. Dan's passion for dance is clear to
everyone, and his trademark ballroom/cumbia traveling salsa style is a joy to watch.
During the workshop, Dan will teach new techniques for moving around the
dancefloor.

Sunday afternoon, Juliana and I teach a free kids lesson from 2-3pm at the
fountains area of JFK Park, Memorial Drive, Cambridge. However, given the work
to do in launching the Friday Night Salsa party, we will be putting this event on hold
during the month of June.

Juliana Melo's Samba Sundays is a hit! The evening features instruction on
Samba de Gafieira (the authentic partnering Samba) and Forro from 9:30 to 11pm,
and an upscale Brazilian dance party from 11 to 1am.

Mambo Mondays has it all.  Great people, great dancing, and a cool, relaxed atmosphere!

Sincerely,

Jeff Robinson
