Subject: #254: SalsaBoston chat room now open, plus cinco de mayo

Hola Salseros!

Been wondering about this whole Cinco de Mayo thing?  Here's the scoop:  On May 5, 1862, the Mexicans defeated Napoleon's French Army's invasion of Mexico City, effectively ending any French expansionist activities in the America's including support of the Confederate Army in the Civil War. On that day the Mexicans changed history forever. This week was the SECOND EVER 05-05-05, and thus you have witnessed an event that only happens every 100 years.  Did you miss it?!  Well, come on out to our continued celebration at Vertigo tonight.  www.salsaboston.com/vertigo.

Also, I just recently installed a chatroom on the website, so you can now chat 24-7 with any online salseros.  Link in from the home page, or just surf to www.salsaboston.com/chat.  Note: It uses java, which your browser may ask you to install.

Friday, May 20, DJ Hernan presents the "Salsa Gala" at the beautiful Springstep dance center (Medford Square), featuring the "Boston Latin Band".  See mailbag for details.   Springstep is of course the site of this year's 5th Annual Boston Salsa Congress (TM), coming at you this September.  Tickets on sale now at www.salsaboston.com/store

Planning meetings are happening now for the 5th Annual Boston Salsa Congress (TM), Sept 16-18 at Springstep.  We meet every Monday at Green Street Grille, between 9pm and 1am, depending on people's scehedule.  Usually 10pm-11:30.  Just show up, or let us know you're coming.  We need volunteers in all kinds of areas.

Lastly, start making your plans for the  LA Congress!  End of May... latest update in the mailbag.

See you tonight at Vertigo!

An Tua Nua is a great contemporary Irish bar & grill on Beacon Street just outside of Kenmore Square (only about 3 blocks from Sophia's).  In the back they have a dance club about the same size as the upstairs at Sophia's, with a sizable dance floor that holds about 150 people, a bar, and plenty of lounge seating.

Close to the green line (St. Mary's on the C train), plenty of street and lot parking.

Irish/America/Bar food available until 10pm.  I have eaten there, it is tasty and modestly priced.

Note: they have Karaoke with my man Kev MacDaddy in the front portion of the bar when you walk in, but don't let that scare you... Salsa is in the back room!  Full Bar.  Please check your coat.

-- Havana Night:  Thursdays at Mantra (Opens May 19th)

It is my pleasure to announce... Havana Night: Thursdays at Mantra!

Mantra, the most gorgeous room in Boston, will be our playground for a unique upscale, international cocktail party with authentic Latin music
and dancers.

Mantra, located at 52 Temple Place in Boston, has a beautiful split level space - even larger than the Greek Club - with marble floors and walls, a
soaring 30-foot high ceiling, plush sofas and lounge areas, club lighting, a state-of-the-art sound system, capacity for 300 (increases to 500 in June)
and a lavish full bar serving both creative and classic cocktails.

>From 11pm-2am every Thursday, DJ D. Martinez will be the resident
DJ spinning music for our Latin Lounge: a mix of Latin and Latin House.
Weekly guest DJs will layer in Brazilian (and perhaps other) beats.
Special live performances will spice things up. And Havana Club's
Salsa, Latin and Samba Dancers will keep the party jumping.

Please note: This is not a salsa dance party, and there will be no lesson.
The goal here is to satisfy the request of Mantra, who have asked me
to create a night that sets a new standard for a cool, classy Latin club night.

I am excited about this opportunity. As recently as several months
ago, Mantra had Boston's biggest, hottest Thursday night dance party!

So... everybody: Mark your calendar, tell your night clubbing friends, forward these emails, let's get this party started right on the 19th, and
let's do it for a good, long time.
