Subject: #281: This week in SalsaLand, plus book group Salsa harbor cruises now

Hola Salseros!
Formatting messed up?  Read this on the web at
     Subscription info: visit http://salsaboston.com/list

A couple highlights this week:

This Saturday, Jan. 14th, is the benefit party for Masacote's musical ventures at Spontaneous Celebrations in JP.  See mailbag for details.  There is a raffle for an all expense paid cruise going on, so don't miss making a worthy donation with a perk.

Also (and a correction from last week), New on Thursdays!  North Shore:  Fellow Salsero Greg Coles has opened a new Thursday night at FINZ Restaurant in Salem.  Originally it was at Straga Restaurant, two week ago, but it was so full they booked a larger venue.  See mailbag for those details.

And... Salsa Wednesdays at An Tua Nua tonight as usual, I'll see you there!   www.salsaboston.com/antuanua  DJ Hernan in the house.

We just scheduled this year's 6th Annual Salsa Habor Cruise Series!  Expanded from last year, we're starting a week earlier, and ending a week later.  Every Sunday plus July 4.  In a few weeks we'll have a flyer out for group bookings and the cruise website will be updated.  If you think your company or organization might want to book a group outing, now is the time to plan it.  One way is simply to take the flyer-to-be to your HR department or event planner and say "Hey, we should do this!"  If you're a coordinator of a social club or an event promoter, opportunities to partner with us for some cruises us are available.  Email olaf@salsaboston.com or call 617-513-9841  Last year's website: www.salsaboston.com/cruise

Also, we're looking for an marketing intern or two to help us this spring.  The position carries some pay and some commission.  If you're interested in joining the team, send me a couple paragraph about yourself and a resume of sorts if you have one handy.

- Lots of Salsa studio classes are starting up this week.  See the mailbag for details.
- Also, save the date, Sat. March 24 is the 7th annual Fiesta de Baile in Nahant, benefitting the North Shore Civic Ballet.  Stay tuned.
- Mambo Mondays has moved to Hoffa's in Havard Square

See you on the dancefloor!

Salsa Briefs:

* Have you checked out Masa?  If you're up for a casual night and some dining and an upscale bar, this place is cool on Thursdays.  Casual lesson around 10pm, a mix of music, no cover.  439 Trement St, South End, Boston

* If you missed the Congress or if you enjoyed it but didn't make it to the congress shop, the DVD will be out by mid November at the latest and probably sooner, and also Congress embroidered shirts (mens and ladies), caps, and hand towels are available.  We still have a lot of things to pay for this year, so every purchase helps out.  Shirts and the video are $20 each, and the caps and towels $10.  Buy any two and you get $5 off, so the video and a shirt would be $35. www.salsaboston.com/congress/shop

An Tua Nua is a great contemporary Irish bar & grill on Beacon Street just outside of Kenmore Square (only about 3 blocks from Sophia's).  In the back they have a dance club about the same size as the upstairs at Sophia's, with a sizable dance floor that holds about 150 people, a bar, and plenty of lounge seating.

Close to the green line (St. Mary's on the C train, Fenway on the D, Kenmore on the B), plenty of street and lot parking.

Irish/America/Bar food available until 10pm.  I have eaten there regularly, it is very tasty and modestly priced.

Note: they have Karaoke with my man Kev-Mac Daddy in the front portion of the bar when you walk in, but don't let that scare you... Salsa is in the back room!  Full Bar.  Please check your coat.

Beloved Friends and Salseros,

I did not know that having a back up plan would pay off so quickly; but, it has.

We have a new venue that incorporates pretty much all of your suggestions and feedback.  We are no longer in a mixed space where we contend for the attention of the staff or get the feeling of being in a fish bowl among non-dancers.  At FINZ (www.hipfinz.com), we will have our own room, our own bar, and even our own bathrooms.

You said that you wanted to have an earlier start and get to bed early enough for the following day.  Therefore, we will start at 7:30PM and go until 11:30PM (these times are flexible but earlier seemed to make sense based on feedback).  That way, you can enjoy an earlier night while having your full compliment of dinner, dance and fun.  For food, you can order bar food downstairs throughout the night - you place your order downstairs (the kitchen is open until 10 PM), you pick it up and eat it either upstairs or downstairs.  Or, you can meet Martha and me beforehand for a full meal.

The food at FINZ is excellent!

We will have a 6PM reservation to make sure we get off to an early enough start.  But, of course, you can reserve later and come up just for the dance party.  Call us (617-620-3022) to let us know if you want to join us for dinner or call FINZ at 978-744-0000 to make a separate reservation.

The cost is still just $15.  We will have a full table of water available but there is also a cash bar upstairs (with us) and downstairs (with the public) for drinks.

Everything about FINZ is first rate.  However, what really makes a party is you!!
We look forward to seeing Thursday night.
Please let me know that you are coming!!

Much Love,

Greg Coles
