Hola Salseros!

Salsa Headlines

Join us at An Tua Nua tonight! Info and discounts or scroll down. Comprehensive lessons from 7-10 (choice of three), and hot dancing 'til 1am.

Trip Report: Boulder, CO. I just spent two weeks in Colorado (...almost didn't come back, LOL!) and was tremendously surprised to see the huge scene there, this in a town of only several 100k people. Thursday night consisted of a social-type dance in a massive new ballroom, bigger than any of Boston's venues. A good number had left already but the place was comfortably packed with 200-300 people maybe, mostly advanced beginner level. I gotta say the music left to be desired... I'd love to roll in there sometime with our guys-- Look out, Boulder!

Fridays: I missed the correct night, but a great local Salsa band plays periodically in new 5-star hotel, catering to the non-college crowd. It's kind of like the Liberty Hotel here, but with dancing. They had a Samba band the night I went, but a great vibe, full house, bars were 3 deep, etc. The Salsa nights are even bigger I'm told. Good times!

Highlights this week:
- Caribe has been hopping! Free again this Thursday
- Havana Club will be in Cambridge Saturday this week on account of a special event at JHCC
- Mamboston2's fundraiser at ATN is this Sunday. Details in the Mailbag

An Tua Nua is a great contemporary Irish bar & grill on Beacon Street just outside of Kenmore Square (only about 3 blocks from Sophia's). In the back they have a dance club about the same size as the upstairs at Sophia's, with a sizable dance floor that holds about 150 people, a bar, and plenty of lounge seating.

Close to the green line (St. Mary's on the C train, Fenway on the D, Kenmore on the B), plenty of street and lot parking.

Irish/America/Bar food available until 10pm. I have eaten there regularly, it is very tasty and modestly priced.

Note: they have Karaoke with my man Kev-Mac Daddy in the front portion of the bar when you walk in, but don't let that scare you... Salsa is in the back room! Full Bar. Please check your coat.

This fundraiser will help make a difference in the life of a child.

She is strong and beautiful like most kids with the exception of having 6 fingers in each hand. Maria’s only wish is to not to standout amongst the other kids. In order for that to happen she needs two operations to remove the extra finger from each of her hand. Your presence at this event is the first step in helping her fulfill her wish.

Boston Salsa Congress April 3-5

Apr
03

Check out the "Honorees" link and lo and behold, I'm being honored. Thanks Choco!

Click on the banner for all the details on the Congress.

Historical Note: This event is organized by some folks from New York (who remain nameless here) who used to teach in Boston, ran some dances, and through a series of actions arguably were the original instigators of "Boston Salsa Politics" that still exist today. This event was originally called the "Boston _International_ Salsa Congress", since SalsaBoston already organized a "Boston Salsa Congress". However, the New York folks changed their name in a move characteristic of their conflict-generating ways, and for a while there were two Boston Salsa Congresses, our 5th Annual one having been held in the fall of 2005. However, we stopped doing these events, and thus the New York based Boston Salsa Congress caught up in the annual count so that we're now having the 2nd 5th Annual Boston Salsa Congress.

Confused? Hah! Don't care? Even better.

Anyway, a great fellow named "Choco", who is the man behind the On2 and On1 t-shirt line and a supporter for years of the SalsaBoston congresses, is now co-director of the New York based Boston congress, and in a nice gesture selected me as an honoree. I'm not about tooting my own horn, but again, I'm flattered.

Enjoy!

P.S. I haven't heard from the other two organizers.
