EL ECO: Modern South Ameriacn Jazz

El Eco comes out of the heart of South America. The jazz ensemble, led by drummer and composer Guillermo Nojechowicz, combines the sweet swaying tempos of Brazil with the darker themes and complex rhythms of Argentina and Uruguay. This is strikingly original music, delivered with strong vocals, percussive drive and, at times, orchestral sweep. El Eco gives us music that fuses memory with possibility.

El Eco has shared the stage with major jazz artists like Tito Puente, Stanley Turrentine, Tania Maria, and Gato Barbieri. The group has also performed at the Montreal Jazz Festival, the Blue Note in New York City, the Boston Globe Jazz Festival, and throughout the East Coast. Earlier this year the band released the CD "Two Worlds."

El Eco has also influenced the shape and sound of the Latin jazz scene in Boston, according to Bob Blumenthal of The Boston Globe, who has described the group as "the seedbed " of many of Boston 's current Latin jazz bands.  El Eco's lineup includes some of the most talented and experienced artists in the Boston area, including:

Guillermo Nojechowicz (drums, band leader) from Buenos Aires, Argentina, has performed with Claudio Roditi (Paquito D'Rivera) at the Blue Note in New York City.  He recently played at Symphony Hall with John Faddis, and has also played with trumpeter Tiger Okoshi, John Lee (Dizzy Gillespie), Lazlo Gardony, Danilo Perez, Carly Simon, Claudio Ragazzi, among others.  Mr.Nojechowicz is a composer, arranger, studio producer and percussionist for theater, TV, film and dance. A Fulbright Foundation Grant recipient, he studied at the National Conservatory of Music Lopez Buchardo (Argentina) and at the Berklee College of Music.

Kim Nazarian (vocals) is a founding member of New York Voices. She is featured on the Grammy nominated CD "Brazilian Landscapes. She has also performed with the Pittsburg Ballet Company.

Helio Alves (keyboards), from São Paulo, Brazil, studied at Berkee College of Music. He has performed with Claudio Roditi, Paquito Riviera, and Gato Barbieri, among others. He released a CD on Reservoir Records, and is featured on Yo Yo Ma's new Brazilian CD.

Fernando Huergo (bass) teaches bass at Berklee College of Music. He has played with Dave Kikoski (Roy Haynes), as well as Danilo Perez, Bob Moses, Tommy Harrel, and Tom Campbell.

Dino Govoni (tenor and soprano sax) teaches at Berklee College of Music, and has studied with Joe Viola and George Garzone. He has performed with Randy Brecker, Robben Ford, and George Garzone as well as the Boston Pops Orchestra.

In addition, the Nov. 26 show at the Regattabar will include special guest trombone player Jay Ashby, who also plays percussion.

In reviewing his 2001 concert The Boston Herald's Bob Young stated that "his ideas are executed with Afro-Cuban rhythms, monkish silences, galloping bop and contemplative balladry and are as original as any jazz pianist working today."

The Golden Dreydl: A Klezmer Nutcracker

Klezmer, the soulful and spirited dance music of Eastern European Jews, comprises a rich musical tradition from which many familiar classical melodies have sprung, and Shirim's show is a goodhearted exercise in stealing them back. Guest narrator Ellen Kushner, host of WGBH 89.7's Sound & Spirit, will narrate her Tolkienesque Chanukah tale that explores Jewish spirituality through a fantasy-adventure, weaving her original adaptation of the Nutcracker tale into Shirim's ingenious klezmer adaptation of Tchaikovsky's music.
