I live in NY and I can dance on 1 or 2. Most serious dancers here dance on 2, but if you go to a club, most guys dance on 1. The issue is that for ladies, we have to FOLLOW. I've chosen to learn how to follow 1,2 and Cuban. It isn't fair for a lady to expect a man who dances on one to lead her on 2...
Solution: Stick to what you know...in your case, on 1, keep it simple and finish off the song. It is all about having fun afterall!!!

: I think it might be easier to stay on beat- which ever you choose if you keep counting the music the whole time you're dancing. If you can't hear the count, you have to learn. Get a timing CD or practice listening to the music and keeping track of the 1. If you hear the count in the music it will be easier to train yourself to brake on1 or on2, or to be able to switch. If both dancers are struggling with the count, the chance of you both sticking to the same one... whichever it is, is slim. For the ladies... you should try to follow your partner even if he doesn't brake on your preferred beat unless he asks you your preference first. It's called backleading when you don't. Also when you get off beat, wait for him to adjust and then just keep following.

: To answer your question Kato, you aren't crazy or alone. I'm sure we've all experienced what you've descirbed. Keep practicing.

: : I asked a young lady to dance with me. She tried to dance on 2 while I was leading her on 1.

: : I've tried to dance on 2 as she does, but I kept slipping back to dance on 1. Then, she tried to dance on 1 with me, but then she slip back on 2 again. Back and forth, we trid to dance salsa the at the same timing. It was the worse experince.
: : I just want to know if anyone out there ever experienced such thing. I don't think I'm alone or crazy out there.
: : Love to hear from you guys.
