What criteria does a salsa night in Boston have to have in order to be considered "cliquish"? If the same people go there every single week, then after a while they become friends. When you're out with your friends, you tend to want to hang out with them. If the night in question is one that is focused on dancing well rather than socializing, then these regulars might also dance with each other a lot. It isn't to be exclusive, but who doesn't want to hang out with their friends? I don't think they should be labelled because of that.

Also, if new people are coming onto the salsa scene, they might just be intimidated by salsa itself. It's very difficult dance to just "pick up." I know that I was intimidated my frist time out, and I had taken lessons for two months before that. Because the scene is so small, you see the professionals amongst the beginners and it is a little scary. However, I've found that the salsa scene attracts genuinely nice people that.

I don't think it's fair that some regulars are labelled as "cliquish" when all they are trying to do is hang out with their friends. There MAY be some people on the scene that just refuse to dance with people who don't meet their standards, and if there are that is a shame. If this is the case then they are really making the scene unpleasant for some people but I haven't encountered this scenario all that often.
