Ricoverts:
List members often complain about the lack of places to dance
where...
(1)...their ears don't bleed due to deaf djs mistaking ear-drum-
bursting sound levels for skill;
(2)...those in charge of sound forget their real job: providing
ambience for attendees; and
(3)...they can converse with new and extant friends.
There are plenty of places to talk; they lack the option of letting
folks shake-that-thang. Then there are places to dance, but you must
bring ear plugs, wear a baseball cap backwards, drag your knuckles,
chew gum loudly and/or say "Yo!" and "like" and "wicked pissah" a
lot. Plus you need to downplay having a cottage edjimication or other
signs of cranial activity.
Slowly but ricolly all that is changing.
Saturday will be the first of many—hopefully! – glorious gatherings
that allow mind/body integration. Olaf Bleck, who runs
www.bostonsalsa.com will join forces with JetSetEvents (JSE) at the
Hyatt in Cambridge. Olaf (who swears salsa dancing was originally a
pre-battle ritual of Teutonic knights called "Das Burrito Grande Mitt
Danube Bleu") is point man. He will be ably assisted by JSE's Zandy
(please do NOT tease him about his momser calling him that instead of
Alexander! Well, maybe a LITTLE teasing would be okay). In any case,
both promise to keep sound levels reasonable so patrons aren't forced
to use sign language and/or smoke signals to communicate. Ergo, if
music becomes too loud to talk or enjoy, let either/both know.
They also promise to play non-salsa music as well, so those of us
lacking the latinoic gene don't stand around feeling silly all night.
Don't get me wrong: I loves me some salsa. Howsomever, I feel it's
Montezuma's and legal (ahem!) immigrants' revenge: "So, round-eye
americano: How's it feel to be a minority now, standing awkwardly on
sidelines while those more fluent of foot have fun? How do you like
it when your pathetic, grammatically incorrect salsa stompings send
female partners to podiatry emergency rooms?"
Well, as the Spanish say, it makes me feel like "el poopo"!
So if you see me sobbing shamelessly tomorrow night while others trip
the light fantastico, have pity. When I watch skilled salseros
sashaying around the floor I feel like a baby watching Olympic
marathoners. Overwhelmed. I feel I'll never make it past crawling. In
fact, I want to crawl into a huge diaper with a baby bottle filled
with kahlua (Wait, I already do that every weekend!). Call me Mr.
Huggies! And ask djs to occasionally play music I can dance to. Like
the best of Wayne Newton. Or something by the Kumbaya Krooners. Or
even the Muppets.
DO stop by tomorrow night. Dance if you want or just talk. Get drunk
with us mutts. Meet and greet other Ricotarians. Recruit newbies to
The List. Get djs to play polkas. Mix it up. Be an army of one. Be
all you can be. Just do it. Climb every mountain, ford every buick.
(Stop me! I'm not just repeating ad copy, I'm mixing metaphors!)
Seriously, stop by this indoor block party. It'll be a private house
party in a public place. Bring friends. Bring lovers. Bring your
lover's friends. Bring your lover's friends' mother's cousin Louie.
Find out what's the dealio with the band "Dile."
And remember: You owe it to yourself. You also owe it to your
brothers, sisters and cousins in Familia Rico. However, if I owe you
money, please pretend I'm not there.
Hasta la Soiree,
El Reeky
(Determined to learn salsa or amputate his feetsies.)
