Well, dancing in the slot means that your orientation is always in one direction or the opposite. Imagine always being lined up with the floor boards. In other words, when you do a move, you end up facing at all times the same direction or turned around 180 degrees.

Circular style, which I've never actually heard it called, means that you don't care so much and end up every which way, which is typical of NY style. It's part of that NY/LA On2/On1 stylistic clash, though I'm not sure why.

Perhaps in the slot is perceived as not as "free" and "expressive" since it's more regimented, but the advantage is the other people around you know where you're going to be so there's less stepping on each other to some degree. On1 is also typically more athletic whereas On2 is smoother. That's because LA Style On1 has a lot of swing dance influence.

Yes, Casino is danced in a circle with a group, but the moves you do with your partner are actually danced "in the slot".

Cheers!

: Got my own answer courtesy of Dave Morgan. Who know there was so much to learn!?

: The "slot" is an alternative for the "line of dance". (The term slot came from hustle because the slot moved as you danced. It refers to the line in front of the guy on the cross body lead. In the ballrooms dances where the slot does not move it's called the line of dance).

: Slotted "on 1" is often called LA style. Circular on 1 is often called Rueda style or Cuban style. On 3 dancers are usually Haitian.
