After months of anticipation, I finally made it to Ritmo Latino at the Lido on Saturday night. I wanted to get away from the Cambridge scene to experience Los Latinas (and Latinos) in their native habitat. What a disappointment. No doubt being the only Gringo in the place put me squarely behind the 8 ball, but the night was doomed from the beginning. The room was OK. The cover waa $8 or $12. I think they charged me $3 to check my coat! In Revere!
The dance floor was huge and very few good dancers graced it. People sat around for the longest time with the lights out and the music blaring. They started out with Bachata (which I love) and I must have asked 15 ladies before I got one to dance. She was no great shakes. Then a lot of Merenge and very few willing ladies. When they did deign to dance with me they acted like I had horns and they wouldn't let me lead.
I think they played one or two Salsa tunes 'cause just about nobody knew what to do. I was very disappointed not to find a salsa partner. I finally gave up and went home early with my tail between my legs. Need I say that I won't be back?
