Finally a fairly quiet week here at
SalsaBoston HQ, actually made it in to my real job for a change...
Did
you make it to Choice's last Sunday for the competition prelim's? Pretty big
good crowd there and a some *hot* Salsa sets by their DJ. Look for him
as a guest at Sophia's on Wed's sometime in the coming month. Anyway, 4 more
couples competed, 2 advanced, awesome dancers! Check out the scene
there on Sundays with Hedwidge and Melissa, 6-9 classes. It's a very mixed
latin crowd and the music selection matches that, but the owner tells me that
the more Salsaeros are there, the more Salsa he'll do.
Also, big crowd
last Thur. at Ryles for the prelim's, with 4 couples advancing. Two more
dates left to qualify! Remaining competition schedule:
- Wed. Last chance prelim's at Sophia's - Thur. Last chance
prelim's at El Caney This Saturday, Semifinals at Supershag Mega
Dance Complex, Waltham, showtime 10pm! http://salsaboston.com/competition or scroll

Also, Miami Club was open for its second week last
Saturday, and it turned out to be a pretty good party, with even the people
from the techno-night upstairs coming down for something different at the
end! This Saturday of course is the competition, but we will be giving
out $5 cover coupons at the competition for anyone heading over. There
will be no lesson this week though. Please some support this event if
you want a Salsa Nightclub on Saturdays. Attendance has been okay but
not great (about 50 both nights), which we expect, but don't "wait and see"
because places downtown don't give you too many weeks to prove yourself
before they feel they can do better with something else. Thanks to all
that have come out so far and have brought people with them!
By the
way, there's a rather heated discussion going on on the message board about
the Miami Club http://salsaboston.com/wwwboard/ and some new club reviews
at MiamiClub@EkcoLounge.html"
target=_blank>MiamiClub@EkcoLounge.html" target=

you were there at the Miami Club and have an opinion, please let
people know!
To get on the VIP list for $5 off the cover, simple email
me your name. miamiclub@salsaboston.com

Also, don't forget
the cruise this Sunday, and Dan teams up with Hips on Fire to bring back
Sophia's Tuesday nights, starting tonight. Link
below.

Lastly, *** informal survey *** Do to the conflict
with the World Salsa Congress in San Juan, PR, we are debating moving the
finals of the competition to Friday, Aug. 16 or Saturday, Aug. 17.
Competitors especially, please let me know if you have an opinion!

Q: Why is it $15? A:
Salseros drink an average of about $4 worth of water on a night out.
On a Saturday, that isn't going to do it. A nightclub downtown needs to
take in about $20 per person between cover and drinks in order to be
acceptably profitable on a weekend. Nightclubs are businesses afterall,
so they need to have profit. But think of it this way: around $20 for a full
night of excellent Salsa dancing at a beautiful club in a great location on
a Saturday is a pretty good deal.

************************************************************************* 3) Dear
Friends of Mango Blue,
As many of you know, many of the great musicians I
have the privilege of working with have other parallel projects besides MANGO
BLUE. One of them is our extremely talented keyboardist/singer Gonzalo
Grau, the master mind behind LA TIMBA LOCA, New England's first and only
Timba* ensemble. The band rocks extra hard, the music is superbly
arranged and the crew is definitely amongst the very best in the
region.
I urge you to support this great project and celebrate this
wonderful accomplishment with your presence. I hope to see you there
and please help spread the word to your networks, I guarantee you a wonderful
time. (If you don't want to take my word for it, please check out below
what Mr. Isaac Delgado wrote in the liner notes of La Timba Loca's
CD)
Thanks and be well, -Alex Alvear
LA TIMBA LOCA CD RELEASE
PARTY
House of Blues 96 Winthrop St. Harvard Square Sunday July
21, 8:00 pm Hosted by TIMBA.COM
Isaac Delgado excerpt from liner
notes.- "La Timba Loca is really not that "crazy". Their music
takes me on a journey from the Opus 13 of Joaquín Betancourt, Chucho's
(Valdez) Irakere and the Trabuco Venezolano of Naranjo, to Calzado's Charanga
(Habanera) and J. L. Cortés' NG LaBanda. But in essence what you hear
is their own, a new way to Timba from wherever your heart desires"
(*)
Timba is a high-energy and extremely funky contemporary music and dance style
from Cuba characterized by infectious beats, fiery arranging for the horn
section, intricate rhythm section interaction, breakdown sections and intense
energy, "Salsa of the New
Millenium"
