HOT:
Stay tuned for an announcement about our Cinco de Mayo party with live band, at
one of our two hot new venues downtown that we've been trying to get

Have you registered for Ana and Joel's Masacote CD release weekend
bash coming up in May? It's practically a Salsa Congress in and of
itself. May 12-14 at Springstep and the Hyatt. $40 for the whole
weekend. Check out the details in the mail bag.
The website poll on
whether to have instructor and DJ reviews, much like there are club reviews, is
still 2:1 in favor right now. Please keep the votes coming, and
particularly send me any comments or suggestions, or post them on the message
board. Vote on the home page.
Group harbor cruise bookings for the
summer are coming in steadily. Please contact me asap if you're interested
so we can get you set. We will be in contact with you next week if
you have already asked for more details.

Have you checked out Masa? If you're up for a casual night and some dining
and an upscale bar, this place is cool on Thursdays. Casual lesson around
10pm, a mix of music, no cover. 439 Trement St, South End, Boston
*
If you missed the Congress or if you enjoyed it but didn't make it to the
congress shop, the DVD will be out by mid November at the latest and probably
sooner, and also Congress embroidered shirts (mens and ladies), caps, and hand
towels are available. We still have a lot of things to pay for this year,
so every purchase helps out. Shirts and the video are $20 each, and the
caps and towels $10. Buy any two and you get $5 off, so the video and a
shirt would be $35.

An Tua Nua is a great contemporary Irish bar & grill on
Beacon Street just outside of Kenmore Square (only about 3 blocks from
Sophia's). In the back they have a dance club about the same size as the
upstairs at Sophia's, with a sizable dance floor that holds about 150 people, a
bar, and plenty of lounge seating.
Close to the green line (St.
Mary's on the C train, Fenway on the D, Kenmore on the B), plenty of street and
lot parking.
Irish/America/Bar food available until 10pm. I have
eaten there regularly, it is very tasty and modestly priced.
Note: they
have Karaoke with my man Kev-Mac Daddy in the front portion of the bar when you
walk in, but don't let that scare you... Salsa is in the back room! Full
Bar. Please check your coat.

Fellow
Dancers from the MIT Ballroom Dance Club,
I am writing on behalf of the
MIT Ballroom Dance Team to ask for your help. We are looking for a few
volunteers to help us run the 2006 MIT Open Ballroom Dance Competition next
weekend.
The MIT Ballroom Dance Competition is the largest collegiate
ballroom competition in the northeast, and this year the registrations have
grown to record levels of competitors. Because the competition has grown to be
so large, we are a bit stretched to be able to staff all of the necessary jobs
from among our own members. So, I am writing today to invite some of you from
the Ballroom Dance Club to volunteer to help us out. We are especially in need
of people to work on Saturday morning (April 22) from about 7:30 am to 2:45 pm.
Our most pressing need is for a few people to work at our registration desk. We
may also need a few people to work in the ballroom collecting score sheets or
doing other simple tasks. Likewise, we need a few registration desk workers for
the Sunday morning shift (April 23), again from 7:30 to about 2:45 pm. We may
also need a few people with cars to pick up our judges from their hotel or take
them back when they are done judging.
I do hope some of you might be
interested in helping. To show our gratitude, we will be happy to give each
volunteer a complimentary VIP Ticket to the professional show and VIP reception
on Saturday evening at 6:30 pm. The show couple is Michael Malitowski and Joanna
Leunis, world class latin dancers. It will surely be an exciting evening. VIP
tickets include a pre-show reception and preferred seating in the
venue.
In the event that we have more volunteers than we need, we will
choose volunteers on a first-come, first-served basis.
If you are
interested in helping, please respond directly to Brad Morrison at
morrison@mit.edu with your name, contact info (email is fine), when you are
available to help, and any other information you would like to
provide.
Please note that even if you don't want to work, you may wish to
just come and watch. With the exception of the professional show, spectator
admission is free of charge.
Many thanks for your consideration. We hope
to see you at the competition.
Yours in dance, Brad
Morrison
******************************************************************* 8) Dear
Dance Friends,
I am pleased to announce that a new Latin dance studio is
open in Pawtucket.
Jambo Dance
Studio 340 Smith St., Providence.
www.jjlatindancers.com julian@jjlatindancers.com
I
met Julian, the director, and his wife at the Boston Salsa Congress and was
very impressed with the group's performance. They are warm and friendly
people, great dancers, and have the goal of growing and supporting the
salsa/mambo community in the Providence area.
Since I will no longer
be teaching salsa classes at Providence Tango studio, I am happy to be able
to refer my students to Julian's classes and know they are in good hands.
I'll miss Wednesday nights with you crazy salseros more than I can say. Every
class was filled with good natured, fun loving people. I made many wonderful
friends and grew so much from the experience. Thank you one and all.
I
encourage you to keep finding time for dance in your life. Please check out
the jjlatindance.com website and take a class with them. It's the job of all
of us who love to dance to keep the community alive and
energized.
There are also salsa classes with the wonderful Tony Felix
before Strictly Salsa Wednesdays and Sundays. You can find more info
about those nights at salsahappens.com, "Where to Dance in the
Providence Area." Or email Jeanni Oki at okisalsa@netzero.com
I will
keep the salsahappens.com website and email list running for a while longer
as a community resource. I'll try to post or announce information about salsa
nights, special events, and salsa classes in the Providence
area.
Wishing you joy on the dance
floor,
--Pamela

Medford – On International Dance Day, April 29, 2006,
Springstep will hosts its third annual fundraiser, Radiance. Attendees can look
forward to a night full of wine, delicious hors d’oeuvres, dancing and desserts.
Radiance offers the opportunity to actively learn and participate in dance, all
while supporting an organization formed specifically to support community dance
in the Boston-area.
Throughout the night Ritmo en Acción—a youth dance
team formed in 2001 by the Hyde Square Task Force of Boston—and other
performers, will dazzle the audience with dance styles from around the world. As
featured performers, Ritmo en Acción provide an inspiring example of the role of
dance in strengthening our communities. Under the guidance of Springstep’s own
Burju Hurturk and Victor Perez, this group of exceptional Dorchester teenagers
has thrived. Their dance prowess has taken them far a field nationally and
internationally, including Los Angeles and Paris. Hurturk and Perez both teach a
weekly Salsa class at Springstep, and they too will display their moves along
with Hacha Y Machete Dance Company.
As the evening progresses,
Springstep’s superb teachers, artists, dancers, and musicians will demonstrate
and invite audience participation in everything from Hip Hop to Argentine Tango,
Salsa to Belly Dancing, and Tap to Traditional New England Contra
Dancing.
Live and silent auctions will round out the event, and attendees
will have the chance to go home with a host of desirable auction items, such as:
a trip for two to Paris, dinner for four with Medford Mayor Michael J. McGlynn,
private Swing & Salsa Lessons for two, Red Sox tickets, and much
more.
