Beginner Gringo: can't get the beat

I've been to three lessons so far and have had a blast (Havana Club, Johnny D's), but I can't seem to find the beat.

I've been told to listen to the clave, but I can't hear it or I have to listen for about 10 seconds and then maybe I know what's going on.

Also, I'm thinking the whole time while dancing, my brain is racing on what to do next.

So, is this normal for a beginner?
